Character Profile: NAVI
Here's a little idea that popped up a little while ago. I was inspired mainly by the robots that appeared in films and TV shows. For ideas, I drew mostly on characters like Weebo (Flubber), Skeets (JLU), Johnny 5 (Short Circuit), SARA and TOM (Toonami), and the robot cast of "WALL-E".
For those of you who are unfamiliar with SARA, she's an AI character from the American TV channel Cartoon Network. She was the computer matrix of the ship piloted by TOM, the show's robot host. She started out as just a voice, then was upgraded to have an image of her face appear on a screen. Later on, she gained a holographic 3-D form.
Also, I read this fanfiction where AUTO (from "WALL-E" wink was reactivated by another AI who served as an assistant to the Axiom's manual pilot's. She was holographic like SARA's later incarnation, and so the idea for an AI navigator came to mind.
The character I eventually came up with is called NAVI. She's an AI, or as some might call it, a 'digital entity.' (Must look up technical terms in more detail...)
NAVI's name has a double meaning. In Japan, the GPS navigators in the cars are referred to as 'kuruma navi', so NAVI seemed to be a suitable name. Originally, the name was going to be 'Navi' with the capitals only at the beginning of the name. But after I saw "WALL-E" (which stands for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class), I felt like making an acronym of my own. It took a while, but I eventually came up with the acronym 'Navigating Autopilot Virtual Interface'. I think that the term 'virtual interface' is an actual technical term, but here 'Virtual' refers to the intangible aspect of NAVI's holographic form.
NAVI is the autopilot and navigating AI system of a futuristic ship that is either able to travel through time or through dimensions. (Still haven't decided which.) She can talk to the crew via a screen that has her image displayed on it or via a 3-D holographic projection. Being part of the ship, she has access to the main computer's logs and wireless internet (where it's available). Since she has internet access, I had this idea that NAVI could browse through fashion catalogs in her spare time and holographically project the clothes onto her body for fun.
I've yet to decide on the character's final look, but I had this image of a short-haired, childlike, elfin girl. Think Kinomoto Sakura (Cardcaptor Sakura) and Pekopon Sumomo-chan (Keroro Gunso).
NAVI's creator is a brilliant, though somewhat eccentric, scientist inventor called Mitani Hiromu (name still pending). Personality-wise, I think he's a bit like Doctor Agasa from "Detective Conan", Foaly from the Artemis Fowl series, and Watari Yutaka from "Yami no Matsuei", but slightly more serious. ^^
There's one plot line I'm considering where Hiromu met a little girl around the time he was working on the dimension/time-hopping ship. The girl--let's call her Nanami--helped to draw out the then-secluded Hiromu and make him open up to others more. Nanami stopped by Hiromu's workshop and lab often to help him or just to chat. During one of their conversations, Nanami would express the wish to see the world someday. Hiromu would then make the promise to take her on the ship once he got it working. Nanami would smile and then tell him not to give up on his dreams.
However, Nanami would fall ill, resulting in either coma or death. Hiromu would be devastated, but hold true to his promise not to give up. After the ship was completed, he would create NAVI, designing her partly after Nanami.
In the case of the coma storyline, Hiromu would use the ship to search for a cure for Nanami's condition with NAVI providing technological and emotional support. Later, NAVI would upgrade herself so that she could access a physical android form and help Hiromu with things beyond research and computer work.
As for Hiromu and NAVI's relationship...they have a sort of big brother-little sister bond. I'll have to work more on that. In an alternate, magical reality, Hiromu would probably be some sort of magician and NAVI would be like his fairy/genie friend. (Kinda like Link and Navi.) ^^
