Common APP Essay
Through extensive reading and a fascination with films, I have had the privilege
of “meeting” many interesting characters: heroes, elves, lotharios and damsels are all
common, but the common man is not. Perhaps that is why I cherish my “friendship” with
George Bailey from “It’s a Wonderful Life” the most.

Perhaps it is because I see myself in George Bailey- the resemblance is rather
remarkable. George and I both come from middle class, apple pie families; we both are
the oldest children, not only born first but also born “older”; we are aware of our
responsibilities, and we both dream optimistically; these common traits led to many of
my actions, which in turn have influenced my development. I have helped in my family’s
doomed small business, which has taught me the meaning of hard work, and the art of
loosing gracefully. Being “older”, I have looked out for my younger brother and sister,
and become a much more mature person because of it, taking on more responsibilities
than are probably necessary. My dedication to my sports –swimming and water polo- to
my intense studies have given me knowledge, (physical and mental) strength, and
resilience.

Perhaps my infatuation comes from what he did, who he became. He is very
similar to the person I want to become. George Bailey is able to change the world in a
humble and important way. He is an everyday hero, the kind that comes around too rarely,
and is too often ignored.

When I am remembered, I hope I am counted among the positive influences in the
world, one of those who helped to make the world brighter. I hope to help the common
man achieve his dreams, help end violence at home and abroad, bridge gaps and help to
end frustrations. Lofty dreams, but dreams I believe I can achieve by staying the course,
staying faithful, and staying like George Bailey and myself. Few of my peers know what
they want to study, let alone how they will leave their mark. I know that there will be
obstacles, new responsibilities towards my family, friends and country. I know I am not
ready yet. I have a lot to learn, a lot of wisdom to obtain. However, by attending college I
hope not only to be educated, but also to grown into the person I hope and aim to be.
