Twilight review/critique/my thoughts
Midnight premieres are always super-fun. Just saying. And for once I didn't need to nap before going to a midnight movie. I honestly felt proud of myself, which is rather sad in my opinion. But we went, and had a good time, and the movie wound up being better than I thought it would be. Diehard SQUEEgirls and crazy dress-up people aside, that is. I understand the appeal of dressing up for Harry Potter and Pirates, but Twilight? Really people? Yeah. Anyway...
I have to say I was honestly surprised by how well the film kept to the book -- anymore, films (coughcoughHarryPottercough) seem to be more loosely based on their novel counterparts, but Catherine Hardwicke did an excellent job in keeping the same tone as Stephenie Meyer had with the book. So getting to the actual point of this note, I figured I'd share my thoughts on the characters, favorite parts, nonfavorite parts, etc. It's what I do.
First off, I want to say that EVERYONE was well-cast. Seriously. I don't know if I could have imagined a better cast for a book-to-film adaptation.
*The Leads* Bella: VERY well-cast in particular. I really identified with and loved her clumsiness, and a lot ofs tuff seemed extremely, wonderfully awkward -- as it probably always would, considering the film (and novel) is from Bella's perspective. And she's pretty besides smile Edward: SO much better than I was expecting -- I definitely wasn't impressed with his promo pictures, but put him on a screen... hoo boy... wonderful performance. Jacob: I liked him A LOT. He was just so CUTE. I never really understood, reading the book, how Bella was attracted to him. But as with Edward, put him on a screen and look out. And you could just feel the sparks between him and Edward in the prom scene, it was very well done. Cutieface.
*The Cullens* Emmett: Awesome! He wasn't in the movie enough. His sense of humor tended toward immature, but that's the way he was in the book too, so very good job by Kellan. Alice: Ohmygod brilliant. She definitely wasn't in the movie enough either, that's all I can say. Alice -made- vampire baseball -- her pitching form was fricking flawless. smile Rosalie: She's the one I love to hate, absolutely fantastic job by Nikki Reed. Rose was such a b***h, but wonderfully so, if that makes any sense at all, and just downright mean at times. -see kitchen scene- Jasper: He was SO awkward!!! But so adorable at the same time. Between his and Bella's combined awkwardness, especially the scene or two where they were together, I found it quite hilarious. It gave the movie awesome comic relief, apart from Edward's little quips every now and then. Esme: She's another one who wasn't in the movie enough, but from the little we saw of her I liked her a lot. She almost didn't seem pretty enough to me at first, but she and Carlisle made a good pair. Carlisle: Like Edward, I hadn't been especially impressed with Carlisle's promo photos either... but he walked through the doors of the hospital and my jaw literally hit the floor. He was just so PRETTY.
*The Nomads* Laurent: I wasn't extremely impressed by him, but I did like him for being sympathetic-ish to the cause once James started tracking Bella. (Of course, again, he was like that in the book as well...) Again, not especially impressive, but good all the same. Victoria: She was gorgeous in more of a glamourous sort of way than Rosalie was, more of a cool-dangerous thing than just "look at me I'm beautiful". And I LOVED the ending because of her. LOVED it. James: Ohhhh wow. He simultaneously made me drool and scared me shitless. Like he was pretty to look at but if you touched him you'd be so ******** you wouldn't even know what to do with yourself. I love the ballet studio scene because of him, that was when I seriously freaked.
*The School Friends* Jessica: b***h. Vain, shallow b***h. Not like Rose though -- more immature than Rosalie. Mike: He was cute-ish. I think it mentioned somewhere in the book about his eyes twinkling (?) not sure on that one, but for some reason I think it did... anyway, his eyes did, so it worked. Angela: She was a sweetheart and I loved her. Good match for Eric, to keep him grounded wink Eric: I wasn't expecting him to be... cool. If that's the right word. Definitely not as flirty as he was, which was funny -- especially when things came up between him and Mike. I dunno, but I liked him. Tyler: I was expecting him to be a bit more pushy on the whole van subject, like forcing his apologies on her more at school than just in the hospital. But he had a good part too.
*Other Supporting* Charlie: Very well-played, I could understand the awkwardness with not having had his daughter around for years. The exchange between Charlie and Bella when she leaves is phenomenal. My heart just broke for him when she slammed the door. His chemistry with Billy was very good too. Billy: Oh Billy. He could not have been cast better; he definitely stole every scene he was in. Loved him. *Indian Glare of DEATH* smile Renee: She's very much as I pictured her in the book, and had a very good role for as small as it was.
Specific parts in the movie.... Faves *The flashback to when Carlisle changed Edward. I'm not normally one for guy-on-guy fantasies, but that was just orgasmic in itself. *Vampire baseball kicks a**. Enough said. *The kitchen scene, or just the entire bit when Bella goes to the Cullens' house and meets everyone. *"Hold on tight, spider monkey." <3 *The ballet studio scene. *When Edward meets Charlie before he takes Bella to play baseball, and Charlie's the typical father sitting there cleaning his gun. It's awesome.
UnFaves *Definitely the sound effects in the meadow sequence -- shinyness does not constitute sound effects. They are un-needed when you have an imagination. smile
Soooo tell me what you think! People you liked or didn't, parts you liked or didn't, agreements or disagreements, whatever -- I love feedback and discussing things, if you couldn't tell wink
