It was raining. Pouring actually and it was night. Thunder and lightning where everywhere. Like a dance, the lightning curtseyed, gracefully moving this way and that, twirling and swirling in its rapid movement. In response the thunder road along in the clouds chasing the glowing footsteps and clashing along in the most clumsiest of manners. But then I heard a different sound. It was the ticking of a clock, a small but ancient watch that always seemed to call me from my thoughts right before something happened. But nothing did. I looked up but saw nothing for it was raining. Had it not been raining there would have been sky riders everywhere, planes for travel would be dotted every which way but also organized so that it would be rare for a crash there. I looked down. Careful to keep from sliding off the treacherous tile. Down below cars and pedestrians strolled around completely unaware of my presence. There was everything down there, merchants selling masks, jewelry, art, and news, restaurants with their food of every kinds, businesses and banks. But what I was looking for wasn’t there. There was no trouble down there. I was confused; never before had the watch woken me when no danger was present. I tried to remember what she told me. The lady who had given me this, my mother who was now watching me from afar had also given me a long lecture. Half of this I remembered perfectly but the other half was like I had seen it through an old fuzzy, black and white television with no sound. That was the first of many times that would happen but I didn’t really have a choice. I still don’t. I am 15 years old but since my 10th birthday nothing about me has changed except a few trivial things, such as my appearance, hair color, and the odd thing that my finger nails seem to change color along with my mood. For five years now I have been trying to go to school and hide my odd tendencies. Some times during class I’d have to leave the room before anyone could notice my teeth sharpening themselves and my pupils starting to slant sideways as my mind slipped into the familiar TV room again. But that was then, when I had a place to hide and try to clam down. But here, on this casino roof were I can still hear the laughter from down below, there is nothing but clam. The watch started its ticking noise, keeping me from my thoughts again.
“Would you stop that?! There’s nothing here!” I yelled at the now noiseless devise.
“Having trouble are we?” said a silky voice from behind. I spun around and slipped. I cringed and shut my eyes as I waited for the fall. But I wasn’t… I wasn’t falling! I looked around letting curiosity show on my face. I glanced up and froze. Just inches away from mine, the mans face broke into an eerie smile. I tried to take a step backwards but the man held me tighter.
“Not that way. I’d be terribly distraught if you fell.” He whispered in my ear. His voice was creepy, silky but still creepy, like the darkness of night. His eyes would yield nothing, no sign of life excised in them at all; the eyes of a vampire. I couldn’t move. I tried but I couldn’t, even though he was holding me; that wasn’t it. His eyes seemed to pour into mine filling me to the brim with an unusual confidence. I was a prisoner. No, worse, a prisoner could still move around in their cell, I couldn’t. I was a statue! But then just as I thought this he lifted his gaze to the sky and just like that, the spell was broken. I don’t know why, but I didn’t want to move. There was a breeze that came by in the rain and I was so cold I acted without thinking. I leaned into him and shut my eyes letting the strange vampire from my childhood protect me once again.
