Stuff and nonsense

Now it's time for Villy's Soapbox!

One thing I've never understood is the "Ugh, I used to like ____ until they/it/she/he got popular. Now I don't like them/it/her/him because everyone else does". Seriously? Liking someone or something popular does not make you a sheep, or a drone, or a preppy (do people even use that word anymore?). Look, just because you liked Blink 182 waaaay back before they made it does not invalidate the person who liked them after they became popular. And please, for the love of all that's good and right with this world, don't go around whining that Blink 182 is popular and telling everyone that you liked them before "What's My Age Again?" hit the radio. Also, quit invalidating people's love for Star Trek. That movie was awesome and you should maybe be happy that finally the mainstream won't be calling you a fat, zit faced Trekkie anymore. It's a good franchise. Why not let them have another go at fame? Stop being so bitter and "against the grain." Grow up.

And another one! Don't worry, it's a related subject.

Twilight.

OMG IT'S MY FAVORITE BOOK EVAR!!!!11!!1!!!!! EDWARD 4EVAR!!!!!!!!111!11!!

Not really. Anyway. I like Twilight. Do I think it's a ground braking literary monument? Hell, no. However, I do think it's a good story and doesn't deserve the rap it gets. Having said that, I understand the anti-Twilight side of things too. So, for all you annoying teenagers out there who gave the kiss of death to a decent series, I give you my most potent expression of disdain (called The Tamara Face [no, seriously, I'm rather well known for it in places where people can actually see my face]). You just made it so people with the afore mentioned personality quirk won't read it (however, this is the one case where I think it's pretty valid). Also, thank you for causing thousands of people to take me down a notch in their mental estimation because I like a series that you latched onto like it was the second coming of NSYNC. Not that you're not allowed to like it; you are. Go ahead and dream of finding your very own Edward. Who am I to stop you? On the other hand, because of you, there is a very vicious backlash. I don't even know what they call themselves, but they're out there. The suppose "intelligent" and "mature" people who are "above Twilight." Oh, please. Get over yourselves. I am an intelligent and mature individual. My favorite book is The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. Not exactly fluff. I do have a brain (and a degree!).
Now, I'm not saying that the two sides can't have it out in a grand battle royale kind of thing (that would actually be kind of fun to watch). I'm just saying that the two extreme sides are really starting to grate on my (admittedly sensitive) nerves. And unfortunately people like me get caught in the middle. This irritation is probably caused because of a few things: 1) I don't like people bashing (harshly ) things I enjoy, 2) I fail to see the importance of the debate (it's not like Twilight is taking over the world. It's a book.) and 3) I am not a fan of snap judgments.
Oh, and for all you people out there who complain that it's not as good as Anne Rice, I raise my eyebrows and roll my eyes. If you're really that desperate for vampire smut, there are legions of websites devoted to just that. Last time I checked, she didn't have a legal hold on the idea of vampires. Seems to me it's been in the popular mythology for long enough to qualify for public domain.

I'm done now.
