Chapter Two- Despite His Warning

The barn fire had been caused by an oil lamp. It had been nocked over somehow and leaked out. After the flames began to engulf te whole barn, he had raced bck inside to get the animals out. He had succesfully freed all of them, when part of the roof collapsed on him. I went to his funeral a few days later. It was almost too much for me to see his disfigured body again. Afterwards, I drove to my mother's house.

She opened the door slowly and didn't show any emotion. " Hello, Nina. How nice to finally see you after so many months. Please come in."

I stepped inside and felt hatred towards her. Did she still hate me for marrying Logan? I couldn't believe she was acting this way after.... But did she know? Had my mother not heard about Logan's death? I quickly whiped the tears from my eyes as I sat down at the table.

Mother sat across from me. " How have you been, dear?" She asked this with a little more love in her voice. I didn't look at her. She really didn't know about last week.

My mother wasn't always observent. " I saw an ambulance and firetruck go out towards the farm the other day. Do you know anything about it?" she asked without real intest.

That's when I lost control. The tears streamed down my face. Mom finally saw something was wrong. " What happened, sweetheart?" she asked as she put her arm around my shoulders.

I started to sob as the words burst from my mouth. " Logan is dead!"

Then my mother did something horrible. She laughed. " Really? I thought that lamp would only burn down the barn, but this is much better!"

I gaped at her. Did she mean what I thought she meant? " How dare you! You caused that fire!" I jumped up and my tears were replaced by pure hatred. " You would risk hurting me just to get rid of my husband?! What if I had been with Logan that day?! You could have killed me too!"

She looked a little frightened now. " Dear, this is for the best.Logan was never right for you!" She stood up and put her hand on my shoulder.

Then, I slapped her across the face, and pushed her aside. She let out a gasp as she hit the wall. I ran to the phone down the hall and dialed 911. Mother came up behind me. " What made you do that?! Who are you calling?!"

" I'm calling the police. They should know who is responsible for Logan's death!" I explained the whole thing to the police officer, and he came over right away. My mother finally did admitt to starting the fire and was sent to jail. Then I called Logan's family and told them the truth.

The weeks went by. I was all alone. The cabin was now very eerie to me. Every night I dreamed about Logan. Every time I was about to kiss him, my mother would appear, and he would burst into flames. Then I would wake up screaming, and didn't go back to sleep for hours.

One morning, after only sleeping for a couple hours that night, there was a knock at the door. I staggered up from my seat at the table and opened it.

" Hello, are you Nina, Logan Stuert's... wife?" It was the old man who owned the farm that...he... had worked at. I couldn't even think his name anymore.

" Yes, how may I help you?" I asked quietly.

" I got your address from Logan's file. First, I just wanted to say how sorry I was for your loss," he tried to look me in the eye, but I turned away. " He was the best worker and friend I ever had. I also wanted to show you something. May I come in?"

I held the door open for him and directed him to the table. What did he want to show me? Whatever it was, it had to have been in the fire. The little sack had several burn marks.

The man sat down at the table, and I sat across from him. " The firemen found this in Logan's bag. We managed to save it. I think it should belong to you."

He opened the sack and handed me a small velvet box. I opened it and my jaw dropped. It was a very large gold locket, big enough that it covered the inside of my palm. I undid the lock on it. Inside was a picture of Logan and a tiny note.

It said: ' To my darling wife. This is to signify our love and keep it strong. You will always be in my heart, no matter what. Should I happen to die first, I will watch over you. We will be together forever. Love, Logan.'

I read the note 3 times before I looked back at the man. " Thank you so much," I said as the tears began to form.

" Your welcome, and if you ever need help with anything, you can come to me." He patted me on the shoulder and left.

I put the locket on. It fit me perfectly. I even wore it to bed.

That night, I was awoken by a strange feeling on my chest. I opened my eyes and saw that my locket was glowing. It was vibrating furosly on its chain. I sat up and opened the locket. It stopped everything. I stared at it. Then,all of the sudden, Logan's head was moving in the picture.

" Hi, Darling."

I couldn't speak. Was I dreaming?

" I need to warn you, Nina. You are in terrible danger!" he said seriously.

" Www-hat?"I stammered.

" You can't go-" he was cut off. The locket shot outward and snapped shut.

I woke with a fright. It had been a dream, but it was so real. I looked down at the locket. It didn't move or glow. I layed back down and went to sleep.

The next morning, I studdied the locket again. It was still normal. I drank my coffe, then went outside. The sky was cloudy. It was supposed to rain, but I wanted to be outside. I decided to go into the woods: to our meadow.

The woods were dark and misty. I moved quickly through the brush. A twig snapped behind me, and I panicked. If I remembered right, the meadow was just up ahead. I ran towards it. The trees cleared and I stumbled into our meadow.

I was surprised by how it looked. All the little daisies that had been around the spring were dead. The spring itself was almost dry. I didn't here any of the bluejays that had nested here before. It was like the meadow had died along with him.

As I took in this horrible sight, I heard a bush rustle behind me. Starting to panick again, I turned around. Was this where Logan had said I shouldn't come to in my dream? But it was just a dream, right?

Something moved behind the bush, and I saw a pair of red eyes. They stared at me as I started to back away. Then, one of the most beautiful men I had ever seen jumped from the bush. He appeared to be a little older than me. His pearly teeth glistened in the dim light. I relaxed a little. He was smiling.

The man stepped towards me. " Hello, what is such a beautiful girl like you doing out here in the middle of this dark place?" he asked moving closer.

I couldn't answer. His face was beautiful. I didn't even notice that he was not a foot away from me already. It was like I was hypnotized by his face. He leaned in closer.I could feel his breath on my neck. I closed my eyes, and waited to see what he was going to do.

Suddenly, he bit down on my neck. I exclaimed in pain, and tried to push him away. He was too strong. I could feel the energy drainng from me as I lost more and more blood. Then I heard a growl frombehind us, and the vampire was pulled off of me.

I fell on my hands and knees. The bite marks burned me. I knew the man was a vampire. I had read about them. There was a loud growl, and I looked up. Another vampire, I guessed by his pure beauty, was fighting off my attacker. The new vampire won the fight, and burned the other's remains.
My savior walked slowly towards me. A burning,seering pain was running through my body. It was the vennom. I coud barely see anymore, it was affecting my vision.

" Don't worry, I'll help you," said the vampire as he dropped down next to me. Then I was over taken by the pain and darkness.
