I am a study in monochrome;
I see in black and white
And paint myself without color,
for starkness is delight.
But against my wishes,
Color still remains inside:
A marbled red humanity
That will not be denied.
So watch with me this hour, my friend,
And witness on this night
My creation of myself
In purest gleaming white.
A little jolt, a tiny pain:
The first drops flying free.
Don't cry, my dear, for all is well;
This choice belongs to me.
I pour and pour my inside self
Out under your eyes
And marvel that you call my birth
An untimely demise.
At last, the red is emptied;
Time now can wash me white.
Though worms devour my skin and flesh,
It is all as one night.
One night in black entombment,
One night under the stone,
One night drinking your sweet tears,
One night spent all alone.
And one day, friend, unearth me--
You'll see then my delight:
My core, my monochrome self
All bleached to purest white.
