It is not a matter of "If" the Zombies come. It is a matter of "when."
Let's not mince words: When the Zombies attack, you will need a plan.
First and foremost, you need to know your enemy. What are you fighting?
Many of today's media very inaccurately depict the zombie menace. Games like Resident Evil and Left 4 Dead and movies like 28 Days Later paint zombies in a light that they are not to be painted in.
Do not overestimate your opponent. It is crucial to know their limits. Zombies lack the brain capacity required to drive vehicles, use weapons, or even open doors. Their damaged brains also are deprived of the motor skills required to run at high speeds, or, even, to run at all.
Zombies are clumsy, as well as slow, but they are also resilient, being oblivious to pain. A fine example of this is their ever-deteriorating body, which we'll discuss later. The fact of the matter is that there is only one way to kill a zombie, and that is to destroy the brain or remove the head.
An important thing to remember is that the zombies will die off, eventually. As we mentioned before, the zombies are always deteriorating. The reason is, whenever the human body moves, it uses muscle. The muscles are repaired almost instantly, and are made stronger than before. This, however, is not a trait you will find in zombies. Their muscles will be used up like ours, but they will not be remade. Every step a zombie takes is destroying itself. The only advantage a zombie has, really, is its' ability to ignore all of it's defects. While a living beings needs rest and feels pain, a zombie can go without sleep as long as it's active, and will continue regardless of any wound regardless of decapitation; if you sever their legs, they will crawl.
How do you defend yourself?
The first thing to know here is: DON'T BE A HERO.
You are not Rambo. Charging into a horde of zombies with a shotgun will result in your death. No exceptions.
Now, as we mentioned earlier, the only way to kill a zombie is to decapitate them, or to destroy the brain. Note, that while removing the head is self-explanatory, destroying the brain is not as simple. The method with which you destroy the brain must be fatal to any living being. That is to say, if you delivered the blow to a human, it would have killed them. A bashed skull is usually your best bet, so if you have a club, give it to the strongest member of your group, which we'll get to later. Just about anything will act as a good club; in this respect, you are indeed surrounded by potential weapons. Take a good look around your area and decide which objects would be the most effective; go for these first in case of zombie apocalypse.
Now, for decapitation, you will, of course, be needing a blade. Any blade will work, but for your own safety, try to get some sort of sword. The longer the blade, the farther away from the zombies you'll be. If you can, avoid close-quarters encounters will the undead. When it comes to the process in and of itself, the main thing is to remove the brain, not necessarily the head. I would recommend going for the neck, but as long as to detach their brain stem from the rest of their body, they will fall.
Now, firearms. They can be your best friend in a zombie uprising. The main advantage to be achieved with guns is the ability to keep your distance and still pick them off. But, even so, several problems arise. First, you have to land a headshot. This is the only way you'll take them down. Second, you have to conserve ammo; if you can take down one zombie per shot, then you're doing good. These may not seem like too difficult a challenge, but the third problem is fear. Having a powerful firearm will not steady a shaky hand. For this reason, having a pistol or handgun in a zombie apocalypse will only get you so far. Keep them with you for initial escape, which we'll talk about later, but have more potent weapons, like sniper rifles, which can be set up on the ground to ensure accuracy, at your potential bunker, which we'll also cover.
What is your initial hiding spot?
Choosing your hiding spot for the zombie revolution can be a hard one. Depending on your motives, you may want to either find a large, public area, such as a military base, prison, or school, so that you can safely harbor many refugees. Or, if you're selfish, which is nothing to be ashamed of in the apocalyptic world of the damned, you will want to find a much more secluded spot in a near area, preferable in a mountain peak. Either way, the important thing to do is to stock your base beforehand ( this is one reason a secluded, personal place might work better; it may be hard to stock a local area with anti-zombie precautions ). DO NOT PUT THIS OFF UNTIL LATER. The zombies can rise at any given time, with no time for preparation. In fact, go right now, pick out a good hiding spot, fill it with armaments and food; keep it hidden, keep it sheltered, and keep it as comfortable as possible; you might be there for a while. Go on, do it. Right now. This guide will still be here when you return.
When you've picked your refuge, stock it up with any and all armaments you can; set up a defensive perimeter with barbed wire fences. The most necessary things are food and weapons, but having a generator and a radio are also important. When it comes to weapons, have with you a club, a blade, an many guns. Always have a stock of ammunition and sniper rifles so that you can pick them off if they get too close, and another stock of shells and shotguns, for when they breach your defenses.
If you've neglected to do this and the zombies come, you can still use your current home as a potent base. Just remember to lock all doors and use any and all furniture available to block off all entrances. Board off all windows, even those on the second floor or higher. Zombies are capable of climbing, and if they see you through a window, they will attempt to.
How do you escape?
Alright, so, you've picked your hiding spot, an important thing to know is how to get there safely. Always have an escape route, preferably through a less local area, such as through a thick of trees or across a river. The main thing when escaping to your shelter is to do so in absolute secrecy. You should already have stocked your base with plenty of food, so you shouldn't need to pack anything. The only thing you need is a silent means of transport, such as a bike or a scooter, and an on-the-go weapon. If, however, you are flocking to a public area such as a school, pub, etcetera, you will need a very potent vehicle and you will need to pack as much food as possible, but still keep room for passengers. You can't keep an entire school to yourself. It is true that in this zombie world, you should look after yourself first, but you should always try and help others around you survive. Also remember to keep at least one member of the opposite gender. If it is required, if somehow, your group is the last to survive, you will need to repopulate the earth. Don't let those zombie bastards win.
This concludes the brief Zombie Survival Guide. It was an abridged version of everything I know, but I hope it will prove helpful. For more information, there are many pieces of literature you can research to help you through this nightmare.
