On a scale of Pidgy to Articuno, female gamers are pidgies. We are everywhere, infact, I think if you define gamer as a true, blue fandom obsessor instead of just one who plays games, we outnumber the males. With this being said, I think it is incredibly sad when girls have to flaunt this trait as though it makes them special, unique and original. No, it really doesn't.
Here's a bit of a reference: I am a Warcraft roleplayer. Not shocking, WoW is populated by many females, not all of whom play pretty races or female characters, so it looks like there's less of us, but really, again, we might just outnumber the guys if we all came out of the woodwork. What people used to assume was shocking was that I played the RTS version (well, at least Warcraft III) but was it? No, not at all. Most of my Warcraft RP buddies are female, infact, I think only Varian, Deathwing and Thrall (the ones roleplaying them) are actually male. Everyone else from Maiev to Kaelthas is RPed by a female and so I asked all these girls if any of them played the RTS. I'm sure you're unsurprised to find the answer was me...and almost every other girl there except Kael because she's on a shared computer and can't take up space with games.
I'm also a cosplayer. A vast majority of cosplayers I know and see are female and many of them cosplay game characters more often than not.
Okay, you say, I may not be the only female nerd/gamer out there, but I'm the only hot one! No, actually, you aren't. Remember how I said most cosplayers are female? There is a vast amount of highly attractive female cosplayers, it's why the community is full of jealousy and butthurt a lot of the time. Now, you could say there are a lot of 'booth babes' and 'fake nerds' out there who 'only cosplay to impress males'. Well, first of all, no, booth babes are paid, they cosplay for a living. Can you really fault them for that? Also, some who 'only cosplay to impress males' have a boyfriend or husband who is nerdy whom they love very much. Would you really judge them so harshly for wanting to make someone they care about happy? Sure there are some who are attention whores, but there are just as many who are beautiful, know and love their fandom and/or have a legitimate, non fandom related reason to cosplay. It's okay to be jealous, but don't be a b***h! I'm jealous of actually one of the people whose cosplays I faved, she's very well built and pretty and I'm honestly still a little overweight and don't think I'm that appealing, but the thing is, if you read her descriptions, she knows the fandoms and loves the characters. These really attractive cosplayers are not cosplaying to make you jealous, they're cosplaying for the same reasons you are usually.
But Bryte! I'm special because I'm a gamer nerd AND I love girly things! Yeah? Your point? OOOOH! LOOKIT ME! I'M BRYTE AND I LOVE WARCRAFT AND DISNEY! DOESN'T THRALL LOOK LIKE BEAST!????!!!!111 ZOMG! I ALSO LUV MUSICALS AND STUFFED ANIMALS, O! BUT MY TEDDY BEAR IS CTHULHU! WORSHIP MEEEEEEE I READ NOVELS!11111 CLASSICS, EVEN! Sound kind of stupid? Yeah, you ******** bet your a** it does. It sounds stupid when you do it to. You should have a personality and identifiable traits beyond your fandom and they should be apparent at a glance. I, for one, am a cynical, elitist b***h. See how easy that was?
Look, my whole point is, letting your fandoms define you is a bad way to be, it makes you annoying to others and seem like a desperate attention whore. You CAN wear an Inigo Montoya shirt in public without actively having to draw attention to it so people will talk to you. You can branch out in conversation. Just because you and your new friend bonded over Les Miserables doesn't mean you can't ask if they've ever listened to Voltaire, just because you bonded over Hellsing doesn't mean you can't ask if they enjoyed Assassin's Creed. And hell, just because you bonded over being nerdy and into things that aren't mainstream doesn't mean that Lady GaGa or Nicki Minaj or your weird grade school girl obsession with The Backstreet Boys should be a taboo. Remember, Meatloaf was in Spice World as well as Rocky Horror. There, I set you up a segue point. Your welcome.
