The following is an excerpt from a book by Robin Sharma titled: Who Will Cry When You Die?: Life Lessons from the Monk Who Sold His Ferrari "26 - Concern with What Others Think of Us" "Sometimes our minds worry about what others think of us. Do they like me? Do I have a good reputation? Do they respect me? Yet, what is a reputation? It is other people's thoughts. It's only thoughts, nothing substantial. We can't control others' thoughts, and believe it or not, usually people spend more time thinking about themselves than mulling over what they think about us. In addition, their thoughts about us change and vary. One person criticizes us for doing a certain action, while another person praises us for doing the same thing. If we base our self-esteem on others' opinions, we'll get very confused. It's best to focus on improving the quality of our motivation so that we act with honesty and kindness. Then we'll feel good about ourselves and won't worry so much about what others think about us." Brilliantly worded, and I just felt like saving it somewhere that I could always find it again.
