___Clear, emerald optics shimmered with curiosity as Melanie watched her tent-mate stir in her sleep, all the while mumbling incoherent words that she didn't dare try to decipher incase it was something far too personal. It had been four days since the fourteen of them found themselves stranded on this God-forsaken, yet delightfully beautiful island. Two days since they opted for their mini-democracy, and one day since Tara, Mitsuki, Liam, Ami, Kari, and Reiji left on their own to look for a better place to set their official camp; an area where it was comfortable and close to the look-out point. Melanie shivered under the thin blanket covering her tiny body. Dear, God. She hoped they were safe right right now. Shaking her head softly to rid herself of any incoming thoughts, she continued to look at the brunette in front of her. It wasn't a minute or two later of staring until Miori's eyes opened slowly, looking right back at her. Green eyes looked into clouded blue ones as the brunette drawled slowly. "Can't go to sleep?" Melanie continued to look ahead, unable to comprehend the words directed towards her. It wasn't until a possible three minutes later that she shook her head slowly.

___"No," Melanie pursed her lips together tightly as she looked away. ". . . Did I wake you?" Smooth, she inwardly winced, You were staring long enough for her to notice. She looked up as Miori chuckled in response, a slight rasp could be heard in the midst of it from recently waking up. Miori's eyes were closed again, her face turned towards the so called "ceiling". It was odd, Miori wasn't exactly the nicest person of their group, but she wasn't mean, so to speak. Yet, she still found solace in the older girl's presence, almost like she did with her brother. Reiji . . . She shut her eyes tightly as she thought of him, she could feel a small pang of longing in her heart. She'd grown accustomed to his presence, his calm, yet buoyant demeanor in the past two months that she'd known him as her step-brother. Please come back soon.

___"I'm used to waking up at odd hours into the night," Melanie's head shot up as Miori spoke. "Care to tell me what's bothering you at such an unGodly hour?" Melanie shifted her position so that her whole body was facing Miori instead of just her head, masking her stricken face all the while. She thought the older brunette had fallen back asleep. Her heart was still racing as she replied back. "Like you said, I couldn't go to sleep." Miori shifted her arms to cover her eyes, a smirk gracing her features. She let out some breath and uncovered her large eyes to look at her, leaning over slightly. "Thinking of your brother?" Melanie felt her eyebrows crease ever so slightly. Miori held her arms up lazily, "He and everyone else are going to come back safely, don't worry." Miori looked down in thought.

___"I know he will, anyway. He always does." Melanie's eyebrows quirked skywards. Her tone was the same as Ami's when she spoke of Reiji. Could it be . . . ? She hid the small smile gracing her lips as she pondered on the possibility. She much preferred Miori over Ami anyway. Ami was so . . . she grimaced as she thought of the cheeky blonde that had agreed to leave with the others instantly when Reiji offered to go. Gah. She gave her props for being so devoted, but honestly! The girl was so thoughtless! She didn't even think before leaping into possible danger! What if she was holding the group back?

___"What's that look for?" Miori spoke with a teasing tone. "You were actually thinking that you didn't want him to come back?" the girl chuckled as she leaned over to pat Melanie on the head softly, much to Melanie's surprise. She blinked as Miori leaned back to lie down again. "It's not like that at all!" Melanie protested soon after, "I was just thinking that . . . Never mind." She let out a defeated sigh as she backed out on what she was going to say. I'll look so stupid if it's not true. Miori chuckled again as she closed her eyes once more before falling asleep. She'd ask her some other time if something came up. "Go to sleep, Mel." The girl to her right let out a yawn. "Tomorrow's going . . . to be a long . . . day," she finished before falling asleep once more. Melanie smiled and nodded, knowing full well that Miori wasn't able to look at her. And with that, she held her knees close to her chest and fell asleep.
