What I See
When I look in the mirror, what do I see?

I see a girl.
But not just any girl.
I see a young woman. A young teenage woman in the prime of her youth.

I see brown skin.
Skin that is both beautiful and sometimes cursed.
How is it cursed, you may ask?
This skin, as beautiful as it is, carries the pain from not only this girl, but from those who came before her. Suffering under the hot sun as the work on plantation farms as someone else's property.

When I look in the mirror, what do I see?

I see two big brown eyes.
Almost like anime, only, not quite...
The eyes, the beautiful brown eyes of this girl
Are filled with hope and dreams.
These eyes, eyes that have seen everything and taken in everything since the day she was born.

I see thick, nappy, African hair.
It may not be seen as good hair for those who like to keep it straight with chemicals, but it is the best hair she has.
The hair that sometimes appears most as a crazy looking afro because she can't do her hair...
And other times, straightened and smooth as silk (until it rains and it's a mess all over again)

When I look in the mirror, what do I see?

I see this girl, who, in her face, has gone through a lot.
A girl who has gone through heart break, betrayal, love, friendships, and a lot of extra drama that makes up who she is.
This face, which sometimes makes her feel bad, is as beautiful as the sun.
It may take her a lot to finally understand it, but all the people she has meet have told her she was beautiful.

But it's not just that this girl is beautiful that I see, I can see that she is intelligent as well.
They say that looks can be deceiving, right?
But she has the eyes of a girl who thirsts for knowledge.
She may be a slacker sometimes, but she is also very hardworking.
Able to show that what her ancestors fought for in the times when they didn't have rights means something to them.

When I look into the mirror, what do I see?

I see me.
A young, beautiful, African-American girl who is ready to take the world by storm.
And a girl, who loves herself no matter what.
Because when there's no one else on her side; she knows that sometimes she has just herself. And sometimes, God.

Wow....
Haven't written anything like poetry in forever >.<
I'm really embarrassed about this, but maybe people will like it.
Now... I need to find duck tape and put it over my little brother's mouth XD
