Moon and Star continue to be home-schooled until they reach their teens. Momma decides it's time for Star to go to public school to finish her education despite the disapproval of Moon's parents. Momma is having none of it. All these years, living off the earth, they've done well together. She points to the animals in the yard indicating she's a vegetarian but she doesn't push it on anyone. Then she points to the greenhouses, she also just an employee. If it's that big a deal, she can find another job.
It's a risk, and both families know it. They need each other, Moon's family makes a living selling what they grow and momma has no place for them to live if she leaves.
Moon and Star sit outside in the tall grass together, not meaning to over hear but it's hard not too. Star shakes her head sadly as she listens to the arguing, her momma reminded she's divorced (divorced?), didn't get a penny from it, doesn't get child-support. ( confused Why didn't she tell me?) Then momma, in that soft, gentle no-nonsense voice she uses, reminding his parents the greenhouses won't grow quite the same plants without a little elven help. Won't grow nearly so many, nearly so quickly. She's not asking to send Moon to school, just Star, not that it wouldn't be good for him.
And off to school she goes....
