Valentine's Day
So, it's Valentine's Day and I was completely unsure of what to do- and yeah, this may suck as being something to do- but you said you wanted to read something that I wrote, so here's the story I wrote for Mary for Valentine's Day...

Love Bites

There are only a few ways that one can react to finding out that their date is a vampire. They normally just yell and run away. Either that or they yell, “Way cool!” and pull their hair away from their neck…but that’s a story for another Valentine’s Day.

Now, I realize that by giving away the whole vampire thing I was kind of getting ahead of myself, but I’ll go back and explain now. It all started the day before February 14th, when Marissa, who will be referred to as Mari or Marissa from here on our, was shopping for a present for her bestfriend, who also happened to be her date for the Valentine’s day dance. They were both single, and since it was looking like it was going to be another dance alone, they decided to go together.

“Jake,” she said quietly, tapping her friend on the shoulder, “Which one do you like better,” she held out two candy bars. “I forget sometimes.”

He sighed, and then pointed to his candy bar of choice, “You know,” he said, turning back to the display in front of him, “It kills the surprise if you have to ask me what to buy…” he smiled at her.

“I know, but wouldn’t you rather get something you like?” she asked. Then started to walk away to the register, “Hey, I see you looking at that card! If you buy me anything, I am so totally going to kill you!”

He smiled again and put the card down. Quirky little girl, he thought and then turned to follow her to the register.

“Hey Claire,” Marissa said to her twin, Clarissa, who happened to be working the counter. “Check it out!”

“Doing your shopping for Jake for Valentine’s Day?” Clarissa asked, flipping the candy over and scanning it.

“How the heck do you do that?” asked Jake, looking between the two girls. “It’s creepy,” he continued, as the girls rolled their eyes.

If you didn’t know that girls, and know that Clarissa highlighted her hair, and that Marissa’s hadn’t been her natural color for years, if you didn’t know that Clarissa wore contacts, and if you didn’t realize that behind Marissa’s glasses were the pale gray eyes that she and her sister shared, you would never even think that the girls were sisters, let alone twins.

Marissa then set the rest of her purchases, two boxes of hair dye, on the counter. “Again?” Clarissa asked, scanning those as well. She said the total as she put the items into the plastic bag. “Mom’s gonna kill you…” she said in a warning tone, but then she smiled. She looked into the bag, “Red? Again?” her sister’s hair was a deep purple color, and she wondered for a moment what she was planning on.

“I want to be festive,” Marissa said with a grin, “Valentine’s Day and all!” She grabbed her bag and skipped out, her happy mood strange. But then, she was getting to go to the dance with a boy she liked. She frowned, wondering what Clarissa, who she thought was still in love with Jake, would do if she found out.
She looked to the doors, and saw that Jake was leaning on the counter, talking to Clarissa with a smile on his face, and she felt a pang of jealousy. That answered the question of what her sister would do, she wouldn’t do anything. She wouldn’t have to do anything. Jake didn’t like Marissa, it was obvious that he liked her sister.

“Jake!” she yelled, and he turned to her quickly, “Coming?”

He nodded and then turned back to her sister. This allowed her thoughts to wander back to her sister. It wasn’t like this feeling was new to her, everyone pretty much liked her sister better, and here, the one person who shouldn’t, her bestfriend, well, he did too.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Mari!” Jake yelled, running behind her to catch up. He was breathing hard and he grabbed her shoulder to stop her from walking. “Why did you leave?” he spun her around, “I said I was coming,” he noticed the light reflecting off her cheeks and the way that Marissa’s breathing was ragged, “Hey, were you- were you crying?” he sounded almost disgusted. “What’s wrong?” That tone was gone and he was all sympathy.

“Nothing,” Marissa bit out. “I was just thinking.”

“About?” Jake said, waiting for Marissa to elaborate, and when she didn’t he frowned. “Mari, I know you better than that,” she tried to look away and he grabbed her face, “Now, I know that you’re upset about something,” this time he just looked right into her eyes. “Can you tell me what it is?”

“No,” she said softly. “It’s nothing. I’m fine.”

“Fine,” he said, letting go angrily, “I’ll see you at the dance. ‘Kay?” He just walked away when she nodded. “You sure?”

“Yeah,” she said with a nod, “I even bought a dress.”

“Okay,” he said softly, “Well, I have a secret for you then, so you better come.”

“Secret?” she was in a better mood already, “What kinda secret?” She followed him down the path, “Huh? Huh? Come on, tell me! Please, please, please,” she pouted in an attempt to be cute and he laughed.

“Nope. I’ll tell you at the dance. Love ya, Mari,” and he walked away.

He didn’t get to see the hurt flash across her face, the knowledge that he didn’t mean that quite the way she wanted him to coming to her mind. Wrapping her arms around herself, she walked into the house.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Whoa, Mari!” said Clarissa, staring at the girl in front of her. “What the heck happened to you?” she asked, not knowing what else to say.

“Is it that bad?” asked Marissa, putting her hands to her hair nervously. She realized that this was probably the first time that her twin had seen her with her hair up and contacts on, but since they had basically the same face she didn’t see how it was much of a surprise. “I wanted your help with my makeup and…” she trailed off when Clarissa threw her arms around her.

“Oh….my…God,” she said slowly, “I have waited so long to hear you say that. And no, you look fine. Pretty even. But you are so borrowing one of my dresses.”

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“God,” said Clarissa a few hours later, when she had redone Mari’s makeup four times, changed her dress (not to mention her shoes) a myriad of times, and had even redone her sister’s hair so that it was in big curls around her face. “That was insane. Jake is gonna flip!”

“Do you think he’ll like it?” asked Marissa nonchalantly, or at least, she thought she did.

“Oh….my…God!” squealed Clarissa, “You like him!”

“What? No!” Marissa just stared. Then again, it had been suprising that her sister hadn’t been able to read her thoughts up until that point.

“You do! Does he know?”

“What do you think?” Marissa said bitterly, “Of course he doesn’t know,” she stared at her feet, letting her now red hair fall in front of her face.

“Why not?” asked Clarissa, sounding genuinely confused.

“Because…God, I think he likes you,” said Marissa with a wave of her hands. The nervous need to move feeling that she often got taking over. “That’s how it always is Claire,” she said softly. “He’s the only guy I’ve even ever liked, and…” she bit her lip.

“Stop that!” yelled Clarissa, “If you cry you will kill that makeup, and if you keep biting your lip like that…well, you know what will happen.” The doorbell rang. “Now, go knock’em dead.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And this is how we got to here. With Marissa finding out that her date was a vampire, that secret that he’d mentioned to her, well, it was a big one and- well, you’re just going to have to see how that unfolds.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Claire,” Jake murmured when Marissa opened the door a moment later. “When did you dye your hair?”

“You mean, Marissa, when did you dye your hair,” said Marissa softly, her hands absentmindedly playing with the bottom of the too short dress that Claire had insisted that she wear.

“Mari?!?!” said Jake, “You look…totally different.”

“I realize this!” she bit out angrily, feeling like he was making fun of her. She knew that it was irrational, but still…it felt like teasing. “So,” she said, forcing her voice back to happy when Jake looked hurt, “You had a secret for me?”

He smiled, and she couldn’t help but smile back, “Yeah I do. Come on,” he said, taking her hand, “I’ll sh-tell you and then we can head to the dance.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few minutes later they were at the park. Marissa shivered, and Jake took his coat off, putting it around her shoulders.

“Marissa,” he said, and it was one of the few times she could remember him using her whole first name. “I’m well, I’m different,” he began.

She laughed. “Jake, honey,” she said touching his shoulder, “I already knew that.”
“No,” he said softly, “very different.”
There was still a happy twinkle in her eyes, “How so?”
“I’m a vampire.”

Then she was hysterical, laughing so hard that she could barely breathe. “Right Jake,” she managed to get out, “And I’m a werewolf.”

“No you aren’t.” He said matter-of-factly, and she looked up at him. “You’re way too human smelling to be a werewolf.” She stopped laughing completely when she heard the seriousness of his voice.

“Jake…” she said and she flinched when he grabbed her shoulders. “What are you-”

“Showing you,” and then he was different, she couldn’t exactly say how, it was a slight change. Maybe his eyes were darker, or his smile different, he seemed taller, or something, but there was a change. Something suddenly intimidated her. His eyes were different, she didn't know how, but there was something very scary, very wrong, and very exciting going on.

Then his mouth was on her neck and she froze, “Jake,” she murmured nervously. “Jake, what are you-” then he stepped back.

“Can’t show you,” he said softly, his breathing hard, as if he’d just done something that had taken a great deal of effort. And then he kissed her.

And she smiled. Vampire or crazy, either way, he was hers.
