Gaia Life
A catalog of my experiences as an employee and citizen of Gaia.
Week Thirty-Two: Love is in the Air
This has been a fun week at Gaia. Fun, but crazy, crazy busy. It's raining here in the Bay Area, so even though I have a snazzy new window seat here at Gaia HQ, all I get to look forward to is a moist, gray haze for a few days gonk

Love? I Hate Love!
The Valentine's Day event is coming - just in case anybody missed the giant, well-armed baby that now decorates the Gaia header.

I just finished coding the Valentine's Day event (so yes, it will probably destroy the site, yadda yadda yadda) and I think this will be one of the funnest and funniest Valentine's Days yet.

Much thanks goes to all the devs and admins at Gaia who have run past events who taught me about how events work, gave me tips on how to run them smoothly, and dealt with my general incompetence.

No Rest For the Weary
So you know how I keep saying that the devs work hard? Well even before I was done with the Valentine's Day Event, I was already working on 2 other projects (and had a higher-up ask me to work on a third). Not to mention that there's a minor bug in Daily Chance (where it hangs on the "Games" page once in a while) that needs to be looked at, and as I code the Valentine's Day event, I'm writing a running list of enhancements to our event backend to make it easier to write/run future events.

We were talking yesterday about how to be a good dev you have to be two things:
1. Dumb
2. Lazy

Lazy because you try to code things to save you work in the future. Dumb because you basically end up creating tools that replace the need for you to work rofl

Unfortunately, this is one of those jokes only devs are allowed to make -- if you call us dumb and lazy we'll switch off your intarwebz.

What's black and white and red all over?
This week we released hints for the MC's, which is something we also did last month. There are also 3 MC's, which is something I guess we're only doing occasionally.

I personally think they're brilliant and it was one of the highlights of my week to see Gaians struggle to figure out what they could possibly be. I've heard some users say, "Thas stoopid now evry1 will kno wut they r!" but I haven't seen anybody figure out what the MC's really are yet.

Personally I'd be glad if this became a Gaian tradition, because I think it's hilarious and fun.

Heydays
One thing that many Gaia employee talks about is how this is very simply the greatest place any of us has ever worked before. Not saying it doesn't need work - it needs a lot of work - but there are few places that allow so much input and creativity from everyone on the staff.

I know that when I'm an old man, working at some database management company, I'll look over my cheese sandwich at the soulless code-monkey moving robotically through his miserable last years as he hopefully awaits death, and remember back to the times when I was young, happy, and a dev at Gaia.

Since it's rainy, you should figure out a way to convert the rainfall into energy. Perhaps, a waterwheel so that it can power the servers for free. Oh, and while you're at it. Bring an extension cord (Several put together, unless you have one massive one.) to my house. So I don't have to pay for electricity.

Happy Valentine's Day, Fleep. You poor thing, coding for an event must be... horrible. Love that flash, by the by.

Such a touching little closing line ;_;

I find the hints a little annoying. Not so much because it gives me an idea into what the items may be, but that EVERYONE IN THE GCD needs to kopipe these hints and think adding "DISCUSS" onto their terrible guesses is a proper GCD topic.

I'm such a grumpy little helper ;_;

Haha, your journal entry made me, laugh. rofl

Nya, I miss California's rain. Up here we're expecting some more snow. It just doesn't want to melt, it seems. D:

Congrats on being able to code an event! It may be a lot of hard work, but 'aint it worth it, in the end? I'm looking forward to the event though, since I've barely paid any attention to the past V-Day events.

x3 I wish there were a lot more places that could make working fun. Work places like Gaia seem to be rare.

Fleep, after watching the "End of the World" video you linked to I'm afraid to click any of the other links. I'm sitting here trying not to die laughing in the computer lab and the guy two seats to my right kept on giving me strange looks. Oh that End of the World, it NEVER gets old!

I'm sure you're doing just fine doing all that coding for these unwashed, ungreatfull masses. I look forward to the Vday event.

I'm also really excited about the 3 MCs. (Personally I think it's a Dark Star, Gift of the Gods, and a scarf.) Is it Thursday yet?

STOP TELLING US WHEN THERE ARE GOING TO BE 3 MC's IN THE SEALED LETTERS, IT MAKES THEM GO UP TO 20K IN THE MARKETPLACE AND THAT IS THE ONLY WAY I CAN GET THE MC'S IS THROUGH THE MARKETPLACE AND WHEN THEY ARE SO EXPENSIVE IT IS HARDER FOR ME TO GET 1 OF EACH COLLECTIBLE.

well of COURSE valentine's day will be funny if YOU'RE programming it. now i'm REALLY looking forward to it. ^0^

i'm sorta surprised that one of the items isn't a blue CN scarf, since we've been expecting one for so long, but i agree, the hints are awesome. i'm really stupid about those kinds of things until someone gets the ball rolling for me, but it's fun arguing with people over whether david bowie is a kind of person. stare

i don't suppose they have any jobs over at gaia HQ for people who can't program or draw? sweatdrop yeah, i didn't think so. u__u;

I'm broke since I had to use Gaian money to buy a third letter xd My dad would kill me if I where and said "Ne~...would you lend me another $7.50 to spend in those items? Yes, I know the deal were just $15 by month, but this time they released three!"

I'm sure they'll be worth it, though biggrin And I love Valentine's event so far <3 You weren't nice to me, though gonk "My therapist was right: I'm going to die alone."

Sorry for the late, I've been a little busy getting everything ready for my trip to the US >w< It won't be able to comment here for the next... three entries, but I'll read them once I come back.

xd Loving the event. Every time I get to the kiss page, I crack up, even if it's a quote I've read before. Really, every time a new event rolls by I'm further impressed by the dev's sense of humor.

commentCommented on: Thu Feb 15, 2007 @ 07:26pm
Awesome job on the event! Tell me, were you the one who came up with all those corny pick-up lines? :p

I really liked the item, but maybe next year you could give male avatars one item and female avatars another, and get people to trade to get both? Just a thought, although I guess that might clog up the trade system as well... sweatdrop

@Yoshiki-san: How can anyone hotlink too much?! If you really don't like it, just don't click it! I for one love the hotlinks... rofl

WTF?! :SCREAM: WHAT'S THAT GAL DOING BY YOUR SIDE?! ARE YOU CHEATING ON MEEEEEEEE!?!?!? *Cries a bit*

Now, in all seriousness, your code monkey won't die, I plan to steal him away and give him a nice life while you go back to your stale cheese sandwich razz and HILARIOUS ONLY TO YOU! =| Do you have any idea how many headaches we get out of trying to figure out the items?

commentCommented on: Fri Feb 16, 2007 @ 02:08am
The new MCs are great, thanks so much! mrgreen

Love? Why hate love? I call it Single's Awareness Day, but I always have much more fun being single. Share the love with all your friends, man. In the words of an immortal band: "Love is all you need" heart

Well, being a dev might be "lazy" and "dumb," but it's a healthy lazy and dumb. Less work means more time, and isn't that what everyone wants?

I look forward to seeing The End of the World Event. blaugh

Well, now it's three in the morning here, and I think I should sleep. ninja

(PS: Your avvie seems strangely familiar wink )
