Gaia Life
A catalog of my experiences as an employee and citizen of Gaia.
A Day at the Races
Hey there Gaians, continuing last week's update, I'm updating you guys on a few of the things that have been in development lately. There's a ton more to talk about, but one thing at a time!

More Sponsorship Streamlining
We've done a lot over the last 8 months in terms of upgrading and streamlining our sponsorships, and coming up with new products for sponsors. A couple of new systems you may have noticed:

  • Redirect Frame: Basically, this is a little turnkey system that lets us put a frame at the top of a window, and load a different page in the bottom. Not a spectacular technology in its own right, except that we integrate it with a jillion other little systems and patterns in the Gaia Framework, such as Simple Grant (so we can now grant gold/items when we send users to a sponsor's site). We can easily reskin it quickly so we can use it when sending users to 3rd-party surveys - to help address issues where users get a notice and then freak out because they're taken off of Gaia to a survey of some kind.

  • Profile Redirects: Currently in development, this will let us take any NPC, and redirect the profile to a page relevant to that NPC. This means that when users click on a sponsored NPC, for example, they won't get taken to an out of date page, a hidden page, or an empty profile -- we'll redirect it to the appropriate sponsored profile. Just a little less confusion that way. It could also mean that if we create Event NPCs, you can get taken to the event page when you try to view their profile. In an ideal world, we'd create a full profile for every NPC we make -- but knowing that this won't be the case with our current resources, this is a good stopgap solution to making it less lame.

  • Simple Grant Security Improvements: We've made a number of security improvements to our core Simple Grant system. There were a couple of big exploits that a few users decided to take advantage of to be able to get items over and over and over and over again. I took no small amount of joy in turning their user IDs over to our Admins for banning.

  • Quiz System Improvements: We've upgraded the Quiz System some so that we can do better reporting on surveys, allowing us to finally get results from "write-in" questions (where you actually type in your answer rather than just choosing from a multiple-choice question). Many of you will see this in some Skittles surveys we're running throughout the year to gauge the effectiveness of the campaign.

  • Scavenger Hunt Prototype: We've been experimenting with "Scavenger Hunts" as a way of spreading a sponsored campaign without having to announce the campaign over and over, in an ongoing attempt to cut down the number of sponsored announcements we do. We used a primitive version of this system for both Harry Potter sponsorship where you hunted down Golden Snitches, and the Sims 3 sponsorship where you hunted down plumbobs. A more secure version of this system will be forthcoming as we do more campaigns.

  • Sponsored Sig: Lots of users have noticed that we have a lot of sponsored signatures that have been released and floating around (Autos sig, Scion License, Skittles Crazy Cores Badge, Sims 3 Badge, etc.) and they're taking up a lot of space. I built the Sponsored Sig system earlier this year as a way of streamlining and compounding these custom signatures, but unfortunately, the project was hamstrung in the interest of time, and older sigs (Scion License, Autos, Aquarium) were never ported over to the new system. We're going to begin pruning most of these signatures, per users' requests, and eventually extending the system further so that we can improve the user experience. For example, future sigs should line up horizontally, NOT vertically. We should also be able to limit the # of active sigs a user has on at one time. There should also be a central area in the Signature section of your account preferences where you can manage these.

There are a lot more improvements upcoming. Some of them designed to do more interesting / less-intrusive things with sponsorships, some of them designed to make the process faster and more error-free. The benefit to users of all this is that the site can make more money if it takes less time to build sponsorships, that we can avoid announcing every single sponsorship that comes out, and - as we come up with more creative experiences and rewards - we don't have to give out a ton of gold and items all the time to get users to participate in a sponsorship.

Anyhoot, that was all a very serious post, so I'll leave you with this. See you next week!

It would be amazing if the Skittles sigs and drivers licenses and stuff wouldn't take so much space ♥
Thanks for making everything better constantly :3

LOL at vid. biggrin

I like the way sponsorships are being done. I'm so sick of everyone saying "Homagawd! Gaia is selling out!" When sponsorships are benefitial. Free items, and money for Gaia. Where is the downside?

And the skittles items are awesome. I wish all sponsorships had that good of quality of items.

Thank you for planning to limit the number of active sigs and for aligning them horizontally. Much looking for to that. Thanks for working so hard for this site. :3

Excited beyond excited about the sponser sig program you're working on. Super huzzah you've heard us. xD

Absolutely can't wait for this one - forums will be so awesome again. Since those sponser sigs are getting scary. Can't wait to see it!

Yay for sponsor sigs having their space cut down on!

I must express some concern about your words on "Simple Grant Security Improvements", however. I'm trying to find a non-spoiler way to put it, but are you referring to an honest-to-god glitch people were exploiting to get hundreds of the same item, or the people that go to trailers and get the item even though they didn't sit through the whole trailer? I'm worried, as I discovered the latter not long ago, and figured the item was granted just from clicking on the link in the first place, much like how the HP robes were obtained. I'd always watch on my main, but with a proclivity for hoarding and quite a few mules, I was overjoyed that it wasn't necessary to go through the whole thing again and again and again and again and again and again. :*(

I guess I could understand if that was closed up so it didn't work anymore, but you've got me worried I might have done a Bad Thing. sweatdrop

@Alyosius: I figured having the item grant at the beginning was for users like me, whose computer just refuses to let me watch all the way to the end of the preview, no matter how short. stressed These days, Gaia grants me the item for attempting to watch it, and I do watch as much of it as my system allows. 3nodding So I say, thanks~!

Also, I am with Sgt. Pepperhat in being excited about possibly weekly journal updates. whee

I'm so glad to see the sponsored signatures being worked on. I also hope for more quests like the feather quest a long time ago, where we had to hunt on the world map for feathers.

Yippee for the sponsor sig! whee

It's nice to hear that you're cutting down on the sponsor workload, improving sponsor feedback, and not have to deal with the whole event NPC profile as much. Of course, glitches are typical stuff, but it's always nice to hear that those problems are being worked on too. :3

Doggy! The guy looks like he didn't have a choice in the situation. xD

Geesh you HAVE been busy Fleep! >_< You guys are doing ab fab with all the improvements!! I just love the idea of scavenger hunts, and sigs not taking up so much room. The writing in on quizzes is a good idea too.

Item Grant: are you talking about the Harry Potter Snitch thing?

commentCommented on: Tue Jul 28, 2009 @ 08:13pm
Scavenger Hunt Prototype: Not so sure on this one, bro. I managed to catch on to the Harry Potter Snitch Hunt, but I never even saw the Sims 3 Plumbob hunt. If it weren't for TekTek and the Marketplace, I never would have known they existed at all.

Sponsored Sig: Finally, I can turn off my Greasemonkey script that hides all that crap. I'll finally be able to play Booty Grab without drowning in page-long signatures!!

I am happy beyond measure to hear about the forthcoming limitations on the sponsor signatures. Thanks for that and for everything else y'all do every day! heart

commentCommented on: Sat Aug 01, 2009 @ 09:20pm
Wouldn't it also be possible to line up all the signature horizontally, as you had posted, but allow a function similar to the scrolling bar in Shops where Users can scroll through which part of the extended signature they can see?

I see an Aquarium. *click scroll* Now I see a Scion car. *click scroll* *Ewwww! A lame sponsor badge! *click scroll twice* Hey... at least he has a drivers license. [/bad example]

A day at the races is the best day ever, even if your watching others race, but the best day at the races is doing a quarter mile in 2.3 seconds in a funny car while behind the wheel!! I drive many sponsorship races that give me parts and even new motors for races, i remember the worst day i had was at finals after a long day of win after win and nearly avoiding a wreck. I came up to the line started revving my engine and BOOM , I blew my whole engine, rod threw the crankshaft that was spinning at 8000 RPMS and blew that out the bottom of the block!!! I was forced to DQ out of the finals at seattle race day, it was the worst but best day at the races for me!! Since then I haev been showered in sponsors and Even started my own team for Drifting along with racing on road courses all around the US!!
