Gaia Life
A catalog of my experiences as an employee and citizen of Gaia.
Alive!
Hey guys,

It's been a minute since my last update, so I figured I'd post an update here about what's been going on in my Gaia Life.

My New Role
I'm now officially the "Technical Lead" for the Sponsorship and Events teams. My responsibilities are very similar to what they used to be, except now I'm taking more charge in how things are done and on the scheduling of the team. It's affording me a lot of opportunities to streamline the process with the team -- streamlining the experience both for the salespeople/developers and for the end user.

Sponsorships
We've done a lot of good stuff with sponsorships lately -- aside from working with some really cool sponsors, like Halo Wars, Sonic, Coraline, etc. (BTW, if you haven't seen Coraline yet, I strongly recommend it. As many of you know, I love Neil Gaimain, and the movie did his work justice!)

On the development side, we've greatly reduced the time it takes to deliver on a sponsorship. What this means for you guys is that we've freed up the developers to focus on other things, like:
  • Making sponsorships less confusing (soon, you will get your item directly from the theater - no need to start a quest, no need to go back and talk to an NPC)
  • Developing new sponsorship tools/games to make them less repetetive - like doing minigames, custom sigs, releasing functional items, etc.
  • Making sponsorships more stable
  • Gaia Events. The sponsorship team and the event team have some amount of overlap on the production side (i.e., they share the same developers and artists) so these improvements in efficiency mean that we can dedicate more resources to events.

With some notable exceptions, our Sales team is also focusing more strongly on getting sponsorships that:
  • Appeal to core Gaia users, such as video game sponsors, Anime sponsors, fantasy/sci-fi movie sponsors, non-lame movies and products, etc.
  • Add something useful to the Gaia site. I mean, if you guys like it, then you'll use it, and the sponsors want you to like that they were a part of that.
  • Won't piss you guys off

Of course, there will always be sponsors that DON'T fit into these categories -- but we'll continue to try to make stuff that is as unintrusive as possible and adds to your experience here when possible.

I have another post in the works about past events and upcoming events, and more about what 2009 looks like compared to 2008, but I'll save those for the next few weeks!

I have to say, the last few sponsors have been a pleasant surprise. Props to you and whoever else was involved in those decisions. I'm not even really a fan of Sonic or Halo personally but I feel like they really fit the "feel" of Gaia (which is obviously subjective, but... I get the impression you have a similar opinion on that.)

I don't always love everything Gaia does and I'm never going to pretend I do, but lately it seems like you've had to deal with a lot of crap from users who just won't let themselves be happy about anything. I guess what I want to say is that some of us do still appreciate your hard work, heh.

(And I like the soulbound sashes.)

It always makes me so mad to see people complaining about the free sponsor items and saying they're going to leave Gaia because they don't like a sponsor. Just because I couldn't care less about Sonic and Halo doesn't mean Gaia is ruined for me...I just focus on how much I loved Coraline!

Anyway, I just wanted you to know that whenever you see a thread like that, I (and people like me) see them too and everything you want to say to those users but don't because you're a professional, I (and people like me) are biting our tongues too because we don't want to keep their threads on the first page any longer than necessary.

Plus, my mother taught me not to argue with idiots.

Everyone always complains about how 'Gaia doesn't care about it's users' and it's obvious you do.

I'm glad that Coraline was sponsored, I'm also a great fan of Neil Gaiman! Did you hear that Neil Jordan is also looking into producing a movie version of The Graveyard Book?

In my humble opinion, Neil's best work ever was American Gods....but The Graveyard Book is second best. ^_^

Thanks for the update, I'm looking forward to future sponsorships and movies. I really like Mushi-shi, I looked up the series and watched alot of it. I wouldn't mind some Dungeons and Dragons geared items/sponsorship stuff. Player's handbook II comes out March 21st, maybe you could contact(even though its usually the other way around) Wizards of the Coast and ask if they'd like to sponsor Gaia!

Congrats on being alive! XD (and on the new position, of course.)
The recent sponsors have been pretty nifty, too.

The most important point there is "Won't piss you guys off". It's dangerous ninja

Anyway, you were doing a really good job on sponsors and a decent job on events. Valentine was good indeed, Gaiaversary...I'll keep my words.

Congratulations on your promotion.

I'd love to have more interactive sponsors. I was thinking Sonic and Halo could be a very simple game similar to the actual game. The Coraline sponsor was wicked. I loved the items and the quest.

Thanks for all your hard work Fleep!

Your sales team is doing a fantastic job with accquiring the rights to make digital items based off the series you listed. I daresay this is even better than the deal Gaia got with the company behind Celeb Snare.
I have a question, though; would you happen to know if potential partnerships with Capcom for digital Street Fighter IV promo items are in the works?

P.S.
I don't care much for my sash, but I'm not going to create a thread bitching about it. It was free, after all.

I agree with Coraline!
I was soo happy to see that movie as a sponsorship and was a great movie.
Now, get 9 on here as a sponorship and well it would be amazing to see the Watchmen on here for one.
Which your seeing that, right?

Watchmen is rated R so I doubt we'd see it sponsored here -- I just don't think most movie studios would feel like it was a good investment to promote an R-rated movie on a site like this. 9 would be cool but it doesn't come out until September, so I doubt we'd be seeing anything for it anytime soon!

Yay, you are still alive~! 4laugh

Thanks for popping into the forums (esp. SF) to take the heat for the soulbinding decision/implementation on the sash item. You're a brave man, and you are admired for that. I agree with the soulbinding decision, btw (You were dying to know my personal opinion about that, weren't you? xp ).

Also, thanks for helping Gaia get more sponsors that will actually interest more Gaians. A special shout-out for the amazing Coraline quests: I never would have heard of this great movie otherwise, and I took my significant other to see it the weekend it came out. The maze part of the quest was creative and made me want to see the movie. The key is soo cool~! I hadn't even known how much I needed that item until it fell into my hand. whee And I know the Button Eyes are going to continue to be quite popular in these parts.

Halo and Sonic are cool sponsors, too, much better than the cheerleader or airhead or dog ones that I skipped. I would love to have the sword the Sonic avatar is holding on his profile; the detailing looks amazing. I hope the sponsor will consider granting us that item for a potential future quest.

Congratulations on your promotion! Also, thanks for the really fun Valentine's Day event; it was hilarious to create all those madlibs and to try to figure out why some of the NPCs were not interested in accepting my valentine. rofl I hope we can see a little more of Meredith and Josie in a future event.

Nice to hear from ya Fleep, congrats on the promotion.

I was pleased with the last few sponsorships we had. Thought they fit the Gaia niche well. Especially loving the Coralin eyes. Also looking forward to the quest system updates. Any chances of a "9" sponsorship?

And best of luck on not pissing us off. We do tend to break bones when we bite the proverbial hand. gonk

I think it's stupid that users complain about sponsors.

MTV wasn't my favorite, but I absolutely loved the items we got from the quests.

Great job, Fleep + team! <3 2009 looks like a good year.

About time you posted a journal entry. xP I especially like getting sponsorship items directly from the theater, though making sponsorships more stable does look like it would bring some more good items for those fanpeeps. Vairy gewd indeed.

Well... the "won't piss you guys off" thing is probably a pipe dream. With a user base this big, there is no chance of that. Personally, none of Gaia's money making endeavors irritate me. The site needs to generate income. It's unfortunate folks don't realize that.

I'd love to be able to get the item direct from the trailer if possible. That would shorten it up and I woudln't end up with four windows open at once. (Part of that is my fault I'm sure.)

Thank you for the update, I was wondering if you were alive these days! ^_^

I gotta say I still love you, Fleep. heart

Square-Enix has alot of great games coming out this year i would love to see a sponcer for at least one of them. I hope you cam make it happen with your new job title now.

commentCommented on: Fri Feb 20, 2009 @ 04:23pm
So we have something like a platform for basic event/sponser, and now creativity comes in play. That sounds fun. ^w^

...I'm not too sure on adding new features... I mean, we do have a lot of things to do on Gaia, and, we can always improve on what we already have... with the manpower Gaia have and all. <_<

Oh, that's right. I'm against soulbounding avatar equippable items. Even though there's only 2 of such at the moment, I still disagree to such idea. Ain't gonna budge me on my belief/feeling/moral on this. ^_^

XD I think it's less pissing us off and more the item that comes with it, like I'm sure all of gaia would be find with my little pony as long as you get a pony and a tail for the quest.

I'm happy to hear of the new fancy title, getting people to work together well is reaaaly important in the office (ha you so know that) but being in charge but not having the say can kind of be nerve racking. So I hope it makes the job a little easier and life that much better.

commentCommented on: Fri Feb 20, 2009 @ 04:34pm
Ah, Fleep's got a big new job title. As much time as you spend in Site Feedback I'm sure you see what sponsors people would like. Can you guys try to see about getting The Wolf Man? It's been bumped back to November of this year I think but I'm really looking forward to it even if it's just because of one actor.

I just want to say thank you, Fleep.

That's all really good, awesome news that I've extremely glad to hear. The Sonic and Halo sponsorships were great, and I can't wait to see what else you guys will get that actually pertain to the commuity.

Thank you for trying so hard for us, and also for letting us know what's going on on the Sponsorship front.

And congrats on becoming Technical Lead, too!

Events & sponsorships make Gaia what it is.

You guys do the sponsors proud with your creative ideas and fun, cool items. Even Fired Up, which is a movie I doubt I'll see (not a lot of those here, but I'm a tad old for the 'horny teen' genre), had amazing items and YAY for bringing back DDR! mrgreen

Valentine's Day was great. Very low-key, which I think was needed. The madlib Valentine's were a lot of fun to send as well as receive. And of course, mad props for bringing in the NPCs.

I do have issues about the soulbound sashes, but I also want to make it clear I think they were a fabulous idea and I adore mine.
