Week Eighty-One: In Between Days
Hey guys,

So we're a week into the Summer Festival and the big water balloon fight is nearing a close. It's been an insane couple of weeks, and this one was craziest (even though I didn't spend as much time in the office).

I'm spending this Labor Day weekend trying to rapidly decompress from the stress of running events.

Slippery When Wet
This event had a few hitches, but all in all I consider it a success. We tried to take some of the best parts of past events, and then spent a lot more time focused on what is actually fun in terms of gameplay.

It's looks like I kicked a lot of the glitches in the butt, except for the glitch where items occasionally don't grant (although, that's tied to other issues on the site - not the event specifically).

The burden now falls upon our event team to make Halloween even better. Aieee, that's a really tall order gonk We have some cool ideas, though, and we're going to start development ASAP!

And Justice For All
One of the toughest parts of this event has been managing user personalities, mentalities, and speculation. After a number of glitches (and being one of the sole keepers of the secrets behind pumping, team size, and active members) I've had to act as referee for the event and make decisions which not everyone liked, but that was necessary to get on with the game.

During the run of this event, especially in the patchy parts, I found myself getting hundreds of PMs from users who decided that the more they PMed me with complaints, the more likely I was to give points to their team rofl There was even a thread on one of the teams' home forums called "EVERYONE PM FLEEP!"

The funniest thing, for me, is how many users thought other teams' users were hacking Gaia to increase their score. I had to make a sticky thread in the event forum saying that nobody was cheating, that the event was proceeding as intended, etc. etc.

The Score
One decision I made at the very last minute (because I thought it was important for users to have fun with this event) was to allow users to see a score breakdown, and to track their launch times.

Generally, I think that an understanding of how their actions affected their teams' score was a good thing and a necessary change. Users knew where to focus their efforts, they were able to organize their teams to work towards common goals, and they became more aware of the potential negative repercussions of hitting a particular team, or throwing water balloons instead of pumping.

I couldn't let them know EVERYTHING about the mechanics of the event -- like how "Active Members" are calculated or how pumping times are adjusted for each time. Too much of an understanding of these specifics would open this event far too wide for cheating and exploitation.

Even with the limited information we gave them, users have found ways to get the upper hand in a negative fashion. It also gave them a reason to complain to me with mountains of math based on nothing at all. A very popular example of this was users who calculated the "pumps per person" average on each team and complaining that Durem's was higher than everyone else's. Two things on the matter:

1) I got, without a doubt, the most # of complaints from team Durem, which wouldn't bother me so much except that they were so far ahead of everyone else most of the event.

2) The average pumps-per-person doesn't really have any relevance with regards to pumping times or launches. The event may indirectly change this value, but there are so many other factors involved that focusing on this will get you nowhere.

Rage Against With The Machine
One of the unfortunate aspects of this event (and something we'll hopefully have a better solution for in future events) is the amount of unacceptable hostility that's cropped up during the event.

On the one side, it's really cool that users are getting SO into the event. Some have taken it so seriously that when they thought the game was unfair, they were prepared to quit Gaia. All that tells me is that they take Gaia more seriously than anyone (I wonder if this type of user is actually less likely to quit than other users?)

On the much more obvious side, some of the behavior breaks Gaia's rules, is hurtful, and is just plain stupid. I'm upset that certain mean-spirited users decided to bring down the tone of the event in this way, and I'm apologetic to our moderation team who had to deal with the fallout from flaming in the event forums.

No Rest for the Weary
I usually don't like to include Gaia in my time off (well, mostly after 3 weeks of almost literally doing nothing but Gaia), but I decided that after this crazy week and last-week's half-written journal entry, I owed you guys my thoughts on the event so far.

That in mind, even though the event's not over yet, I'd like some feedback on a couple of things. You can either include it in your journal response, or PM it directly to me:

Fleep's Summer Festival 2007 Feedback Questions

1. Do you like that there was a competitive aspect in this event?
Yes. It got me all hyped up. The competitive aspect of the event made it seem more realistic.

2. Did you like the media pack? Should we release things like this for future events?
Yes.

3. Did you feel that the event lasted too long?
No. I thought it was over too soon. I didn't get to pump enough.

4. Did you feel as though there was enough new content during the first week to keep you interested (release, media pack, manga)
Yes.

5. How do you feel about this event as compared to past events?
The most fun.

6. Would you like to see this event again next year?
Yes but exactly the same.

7. What was your favorite thing about this event?
The teamwork involved and I found more people participated in the forums than usually.

8. What would you have changed about the event?
Nothing.

This is by far the most fun event I've participated in; even more fun than shooting zombies or bitting humans.

Fleep and Co. obviously did an extraordinary job maintaining the event.

No need to apologize for the poor sportsmanship exhibited during the event. Some users just need to realize that words on the internet do hurt.

All in all, awesome job.

1. Yes!

2. Eh, it didn't do much for me. Take it or leave it.

3. No.

4. To be honest, I wasn't interested in the manga or the media, what kept me interested was the sheer fun of the event.

5. The best one in a long time.

6. Yes!

7. I liked how the event items varied based on team, and I loved the competition. heart

8. I wish the launches were tracked better. The fact that fixing launch glitches were based on user input (or that's what I assumed, based on the sticky) seemed like poor planning to me. I also wish trophies were still possible to sell.

1. Do you like that there was a competitive aspect in this event?
I don't like that a lot of people turned it into city vs. city elitism, but it was nowhere NEAR as bad as the horrific Grombie event of Halloween 2k5. Other than that, loved the competition.

2. Did you like the media pack? Should we release things like this for future events?
Didn't do a thing with it, but I liked it. If it's an easy thing to offer during an event, go right ahead and keep doing it.

3. Did you feel that the event lasted too long?
Not at all. It was a long enough span of time that even if someone was gone for a weekend or working all week or whatever, they could still participate.

4. Did you feel as though there was enough new content during the first week to keep you interested (release, media pack, manga)
I was interested enough just in the waterfight. Everything else was a bonus. As long as the event itself is interesting, I won't be bored.

5. How do you feel about this event as compared to past events?
One of the best I've ever participated in, honestly.

6. Would you like to see this event again next year?
I don't see why not. smile

7. What was your favorite thing about this event?
The squirt gun.

8. What would you have changed about the event?
Why the hell can't we sell/trade trophies? You've never had item locks before. PLEASE don't do it again and PLEASE alter the trophies so they can be exchanged.

Fleep's Summer Festival 2007 Feedback Questions

1. Do you like that there was a competitive aspect in this event?
I loved it. Nothing like a good ol' competition!

2. Did you like the media pack? Should we release things like this for future events?
That was an awesome decision, made it a lot easier than having to find and steal borrow images.

3. Did you feel that the event lasted too long?
Not really, I work 12+ RL hours a day, if it didn't last fairly long, I wouldn't have a chance to pump for my team!

4. Did you feel as though there was enough new content during the first week to keep you interested (release, media pack, manga)
Yes, and I like that it wasn't all at once.

5. How do you feel about this event as compared to past events?
I liked it. but then, I'm a total fangirl um, fanboy of Gaia. I normally like the events, breaks up the monotony of forums/mp/fishing.

6. Would you like to see this event again next year?
I would like to see AN event for sure. I loved the pools in towns, that rocked.

7. What was your favorite thing about this event?
Competition!

8. What would you have changed about the event?
No glitches. LOL, but, barring that the media pack released during the build up, so we can get a head start on sigs/banners/etc.

commentCommented on: Mon Sep 10, 2007 @ 07:40am
1. Do you like that there was a competitive aspect in this event?
Indeed! It made things heated and exciting. biggrin

2. Did you like the media pack? Should we release things like this for future events?
Yes and yes! I loved seeing all the banners the teams came up with, mostly the humorous ones. :3

3. Did you feel that the event lasted too long?
Yes, but I understand the need to make it that way. Not everyone has hours and hours to spend on Gaia, so it gives a chance to almost everyone who doesn't have the convenience to sign in everyday.

4. Did you feel as though there was enough new content during the first week to keep you interested (release, media pack, manga)?
Hmm. I was very interested with the event, and yet I came off with the feeling that if it's going to go on this long, there should be new things introduced every few days...maybe new items or a temporary new twist on how the game's going to go. biggrin

5. How do you feel about this event as compared to past events?
I found it a lot more exciting! I think the team effort aspect of it made participation feel more active than in past events. The only downer about it was the attitude of some users, but that can't exactly be controlled. confused

6. Would you like to see this event again next year?
Indeed! whee

Snowball fight in winter, plzkthx?

7. What was your favorite thing about this event?
The plot update, the teamwork aspect, and chatting it up with guild friends.

8. What would you have changed about the event?
HOKAY. biggrin The day before the final calculation of the scores would be SUDDEN DEATH DAY, where all sorts of handicaps would be placed. mrgreen For example, team with the highest score gets points deducted whenever they're hit with a megaweapon. Team with the lowest score gets double the points for making a launch. Keep the randomized aspect of the launches and it shouldn't be too big of a deal. razz

I would completely do away with the ability to raid other forums. While I sometimes liked to go to the other teams I was rooting for to at least give them a shred of motivation, the flaming got bad and really cut down the morale. gonk Interaction between the teams is best left to the main forum alone, IMO.

Involvement of the rest of the NPCs! I was excited to see the lesser-known NPCs (namely, Josie and Jinx) join the fight, but...no words out of them? Just the leaders? A single post would have sufficed....just like the leaders did. I love seeing the lesser-known characters get some limelight... ;.;

I think it would have been nice to have a separate meter and prizes for the pumping, but I kinda see the downside of that. It makes the prizes the main focus instead of the team effort. People would be going, "Nah, I got all the items. I see no reason to keep pumping. blaugh "

Final Words:
Overall, I found this event pretty much the most fun experience of my Gaian life. whee A job well done indeed, even though there were some snags, but hey, nobody's perfect. I'm looking forward to another Summer Festival next year! And I'm so psyched for the upcoming Halloween event! 4laugh

Snowball fight in winter, plzkthx?

Fleep's Summer Festival 2007 Feedback Questions

1. Do you like that there was a competitive aspect in this event? Yes and no it was fun and then some people took it too far . I didn't like attacks outside the forums( profile towns pm and so on) nor like when people went too dirty very nasty all teams had their members . I wish we only had one option to get points like just hitting which was more fun then pumping but this event was fun just needed more control.

2. Did you like the media pack? Should we release things like this for future events? Yes and yes . I wanted all the NPC they have it where you can pump with them or hit them . I wanted Ian somehow to be there

3. Did you feel that the event lasted too long?No but I wanted the town part where you hit people just to for fun to be another week not in between . I was busy pumping and never was in towns to enjoy just throwing for fun . I thought the balloons event in towns should have been after the fight so we all could have party.

4. Did you feel as though there was enough new content during the first week to keep you interested . yes but because you keep us hanging I wanted more.

5. How do you feel about this event as compared to past events? it was fun and a way to meet new people I enjoy being on a team . Didn't like though that Cindy join after not being on one though. There wasn't any glitch for me to get a prize unlike some event in the past. I like when they are in the forums and not items to find or a box floating

6. Would you like to see this event again next year? yes

7. What was your favorite thing about this event? Hitting Fleep and the storyline around it. pirate

8. What would you have changed about the event?
Just hitting random people more points for that and no pumping . I think throwing was more fun though it was less for your team pumping made it a bit boring but you felt you had to do it to help your team sweatdrop when I just wanted to throw.

1. Do you like that there was a competitive aspect in this event?

yes, though at times some people got a little too competitive and nasty.

2. Did you like the media pack? Should we release things like this for future events?

Well, I guess though if you do print scr it gets the same results though it does make things easier.

3. Did you feel that the event lasted too long?

Maybe but you would need it to be long enough so those who just joined or are away can play as well, so I guess the amount was fine.

4. Did you feel as though there was enough new content during the first week to keep you interested (release, media pack, manga)

yes

5. How do you feel about this event as compared to past events?

I wasn't a member long enough to really say but I did really like the interactive part very much were you had two options either pump or throw were the last one I did like this was just kiss though I can see why that one only had that as an option.

6. Would you like to see this event again next year?

yes, though maybe with more of a mood patrol next time for the bashing since reporting didn't seem to really work. My mule reported someone attacking her to a mod for the event and he said to not report to him and I didn't get why if he was a mod for the event why I couldn't report harassment to him?

7. What was your favorite thing about this event?

The team work and the cool free items.

8. What would you have changed about the event?

Just maybe the mods thing, more protection from bad bashing even if they aren't the ones to report to I say if they are a mod for the event they should be able to at lest help the person out. Also sometimes I guess becuase of the glish it would have been nice if the score matched the amount of members on a team and the work put into by members. Though maybe that was talked about????

Okay thanks for asking.

1. Do you like that there was a competitive aspect in this event?
Yes. Aside from the flamers, trollers, the threatening-to-leave-ers and so on, it was a lot of fun having organized teams figuring out who should do what and such.
2. Did you like the media pack? Should we release things like this for future events?
I think I missed that media pack thingum. >.>
3. Did you feel that the event lasted too long?
Nope. I think it could have lasted a bit longer. razz
4. Did you feel as though there was enough new content during the first week to keep you interested (release, media pack, manga)
Yes.
5. How do you feel about this event as compared to past events?
It was a lot more fun, especially with the different prizes for the different levels. 3nodding
6. Would you like to see this event again next year?
Yes! blaugh
7. What was your favorite thing about this event?
The fact that as you advanced in rank, you gained different prizes. It gets a bit boring when you only can get 2 or so types of prizes in an event.
8. What would you have changed about the event?
Nothing really. Though maybe have an option to switch teams after a certain point?

-*looks at hordes of arguing people*.... Nah...
2. Did you like the media pack? Should we release things like this for future events?
Yes. =D
3. Did you feel that the event lasted too long?
Just a bit.
4. Did you feel as though there was enough new content during the first week to keep you interested (release, media pack, manga)
yep, but you should thin it out through the event...
5. How do you feel about this event as compared to past events?
I havent been here that long...
6. Would you like to see this event again next year?
If you guys mix it up a bit.
7. What was your favorite thing about this event?
ITEMS. 0.0
8. What would you have changed about the event?
Its length.

1. Do you like that there was a competitive aspect in this event?
Absolutely! The ability to compete helps build team loyalty and new friendships with those we're working with. Overall it made the wholeevent more enjoyable.

2. Did you like the media pack? Should we release things like this for future events?
It doesn't hurt. I personally didn't use any of it, but I saw people using the media to create their own signatures.

3. Did you feel that the event lasted too long?
This event DID kind of drag on. 4 days is reasonable in my mind. It's enough time for most gaians to get a chance to experience it, but short enough so it doesn't get too stale and boring.

4. Did you feel as though there was enough new content during the first week to keep you interested (release, media pack, manga)
Oh god yes! It was quite a good week (followed shortly by MMVII, which was awesome.) and the content helped things stay interesting.

5. How do you feel about this event as compared to past events?
Well, I really loved the Halloween event where we got to go around shooting each other with shotguns, but this event was a close second! (Come on... SHOTGUNS!)

6. Would you like to see this event again next year?
As long as something is done to give it a new twist I'd have to say yes! (Perhaps some more diversity in teams? A reason to choose one over another?)

7. What was your favorite thing about this event?
The unique team items! Knowing that these items are more collectible than the other event items is nice. (I am referring to the T-shirts. Unless everyone has 3 mules, than there will never be a complete set for everyone.)

8. What would you have changed about the event?
Personally, not much. It could have used more boomstick, but otherwise it was pretty damn good!

A little late but oh well smile

1. Do you like that there was a competitive aspect in this event? Yes, I know there was a lot of people saying everyone was being mean and trolling, but I was on this event for a lot of time and I didn't see any serious flaming at all. Sure there was a bit of sledging ("Yo momma eats raw pumperknickles" and that kind of stuff), but none of it seemed very hostile or even serious to me.

2. Did you like the media pack? Should we release things like this for future events? The media pack was SWEET. Awesome. You should release one every event because so many people love to make event-specific signatures, avatars, banners, etc - it was cool that you guys gave us high-quality stuff that we didn't have to edit away from text and all that! Plus, it goes nicely in my little 'collection of stuff from Gaia events' folder xd

3. Did you feel that the event lasted too long? Nope - it was fine for me. Very relaxing. I could do all the stuff I normally do in real life, yet still got all the items for myself and one or two mules - rather than panicking and having to do it all at the last second. However, it didn't last too long that you sort of forgot about it. Although, that said, some people were still complaining it didn't last long enough/went too long - but some people are never happy, hey? biggrin

4. Did you feel as though there was enough new content during the first week to keep you interested (release, media pack, manga) I thought so - but then, I'm easily contented biggrin I wish the manga was longer... but I always wish it was long - like a frickin' novel could be released and I'd still want more sweatdrop

5. How do you feel about this event as compared to past events? Hmm. Well, it was pretty good, better than the last few we've had in my opinion (that goes back to the Zurg event last year), but it wasn't as good as some of those classic events. The Olympics, the 2 zombie events and the Elftech events were all SO frickin' sweet with their heavy storyline, user interaction (not TOO much, just answering pms and having guild journals), awesome items and lots to do (carolling/trick or treating, fighting zombies, running around towns, looking on the world maps, etc). Something that evolves over time, you know?

6. Would you like to see this event again next year? Sure, I thought it was fun (a water balloon fight was a novelty for me at that time because it's winter for me here xd ).

7. What was your favorite thing about this event? Hmm. I liked that everyone had to pick a team and try to win for a special item - no one knew what it was so everyone got into it. I liked the uniqueness of towns (very pretty) and I liked that it was glitchy or the items insanely hard to get 3nodding

8. What would you have changed about the event? Probably would've added an extra item into the drop filler-up-er-er, or possibly had a seperate drop for people that pumped instead of threw water balloons... you know, different prizes depending on how you helped your team?

1. Do you like that there was a competitive aspect in this event?
To a certain extent, but mostly it got pretty bad. There were people saying really bad things to other teams that was not just taunting. But there were good people.

2. Did you like the media pack? Should we release things like this for future events?
Media pack??? That was the water guns and other things right?

3. Did you feel that the event lasted too long?
I believe that the event lasted way to long. I prefer at least a week or less. After a certain amount of time many people get bored of events and leave.

4. Did you feel as though there was enough new content during the first week to keep you interested (release, media pack, manga)
Yes! Definetly the manga slowly being unpacked. Also some of the items were spectacular, the t-shirts were of a simple but cool design and the water guns were sleek.

5. How do you feel about this event as compared to past events?
Even though it was long and at times rude, it was a good event.

6. Would you like to see this event again next year?
Not as long. ((I feel like a bugger for keeping on pointing that out.))

7. What was your favorite thing about this event?
Making new friends definetally, insulting intellictually those who were dissing like they had just came out of a gang in Compton.

8. What would you have changed about the event?
As I have said before, length. Another thing my friend kept noticing that she thought the gift all the winners would get would be a new skin. I told her unlikely, but she did point out that the manga was talking about vampires. So I guess the manga kinda mislead a couple of people to guessing what the prize was.

That's all! Keep up the good work Fleep! whee

1. Do you like that there was a competitive aspect in this event?
At first I was all competive and gung-ho and all that fun stuff. But I just gave up and went with everything for fun. I avoided the main areas, and stuck with threads that were not bashing other teams

2. Did you like the media pack? Should we release things like this for future events?
I'm not really sure what this is. I remember hearing about it but I don't really know what it is.

3. Did you feel that the event lasted too long?

Yes, i do. I like that it was spaced to make sure everyone got on but it took away from what makes an event special and made it more mundane.

4. Did you feel as though there was enough new content during the first week to keep you interested (release, media pack, manga)

New manga was nice, but when so much is released at once, you lose some of what is happening because you have so much info thrown at you.

5. How do you feel about this event as compared to past events?

Getting a good group feeling and feeling like i could connect with more gaians was nice. The length of it was not.

6. Would you like to see this event again next year?

Yes

7. What was your favorite thing about this event?

Throwing balloons at people

8. What would you have changed about the event?
The length.

Fleep's Summer Festival 2007 Feedback Questions

1. Do you like that there was a competitive aspect in this event?
Yes, and no, mostly because I'm a sore loser XDDD

2. Did you like the media pack? Should we release things like this for future events?
I LOVED the media pack, I wish there were media packs for EVERY event, though I was kinda hoping for a team-themed wallpaper mixed in with all of it.

3. Did you feel that the event lasted too long?
It was a little lengthy, yea. I lost interest after a day or two to tell you the truth, there's but so much pumping/balloon throwing you can do before it gets a little redundant.

4. Did you feel as though there was enough new content during the first week to keep you interested (release, media pack, manga)
Yes biggrin

5. How do you feel about this event as compared to past events?
I loved it. It was "fun for fun's sake". It was kinda like the olympic event that way <3

6. Would you like to see this event again next year?
Definately!

7. What was your favorite thing about this event?
I...didn't really have a favorite part really. I never really have a favorite part of a gaia event, I just love having a good time XD

8. What would you have changed about the event?

1. Do you like that there was a competitive aspect in this event?

I sure did. :3

2. Did you like the media pack? Should we release things like this for future events?
Definitely, you all really did a great job in releasing that. Lots of people had a great time editing that to their heart's content.

3. Did you feel that the event lasted too long?
The balloon fight lasted maybe a day or two over what would be managable. I saw a lot of people wishing it would be over. (But still wanting their team to win.)

4. Did you feel as though there was enough new content during the first week to keep you interested (release, media pack, manga)

Yes indeedy. :3

5. How do you feel about this event as compared to past events?
Compared to the older events of '05 and such, this was awesome. It's wonderful to see Gaia grow so much that we can be involved in an event and not have the site crash. (XD; I don't mean to sound rude, I truly mean that I'm glad our events are less and less unruly, it's truly a credit to the programers and hardware involved.)

6. Would you like to see this event again next year?
I would love to. I think this breaks up the empty space between Easter and Halloween events nicely.

7. What was your favorite thing about this event?
The graphics and release of the various graphics involved. It was just enough to be amusing, without killing my el-crappeh dial-up connection. The release of the pack was wonderful, as it gave way to quite a few creative banners that were most amusing.

8. What would you have changed about the event?

Maybe grab some responisble Gaians before the event and have them monitor threads? I don't know how many times I was speaking peacefully to members of other teams when a rush of "omg lyke ur team needz 2 die i hat u all!!!!one" users popped in saying that or even worse. I have never been so insulted on Gaia, ever. People were using racial slurs, calling others faggots... It was a dark spot on what other wise was a lovely event. (I was merely wishing everyone luck in an opposite team, no insults on my part, and several people attacked me for being there. o.O Even though... I wished them luck.)
