Jareth looked into the crystal in his hand, pictures moved from inside it and he could almost hear the song that accompanied it once more. He saw Sarah searching vainly for the familiarity of him and almost smiled.

But the image changed, she was glaring at him fiercely through her eyes, their fiery depths piercing him. She was filled with contempt. She hated him, and he didn’t know why… he had done everything she’d asked. Why didn’t she see it?

He had offered her everything, all she had to do was do as he asked and he would be hers. Everything would be hers… and she, she would be his. He asked for so little. Just fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave.

Why didn’t she just listen? He would have given her brother back, she would have everything she desired and he would have her. The Labyrinth would have had its queen, if he had been willing to share. Now all he could do was watch from afar as she went through her life, slowly growing older.

He knew soon he would not be able to bear to watch her, but in the end that was all he could do, because he could not save her from death if she did not want to be saved.
