Long ago, a beautiful enchantress was in charge of the seas. Nothing will sail them without her approval. She lived in a magical land, but also a dangerous one. A realm where being what she was became a disgrace. Getting sick of everything, she decided to run away. She wrote a letter to her closest friends and told them she was leaving, ne’er to return. She immigrate to the north, to try a find a better life. New friends that wouldn’t turn away at her power; new beginnings. But one day, as she sat on the warm sand, she glanced at a mortal boy. He was one of the most handsome beings she had ever laid eyes on. He was tall, around six feet tall. He had the dreamiest dark eyes, and his not-too-long dark hair fell before them. His smile was a flash of white teeth, shining even more in the sunlight. The Goddess took curious glances at this mortal, he never getting close enough for her to engage in conversation. Suddenly, the boy looked her way and their eyes locked in an eternal fire. Love. The boy approached the Goddess and she, not knowing what to do, remained speechless. “Hey there. How’s it going?” The Goddess’s long, shining, brown curls gleamed in the sun as she looked up at him. He, wondering why she hadn’t answered, gave her another flash of his smile. “Now don’t be shy, I don’t bite.” The boy sat beside her and took a hold of her hand. He knew, somehow, that she wouldn’t push him away if he did. They remained in silence as they contemplated the waves and the sun, now setting behind the horizon. He moved a little closer to her, and wrapped his arms around her body. “Is this ok?” He asked as he looked to her, his eyes revealing the kind light of his soul. She nodded slowly as she rested her head on his chest, he being much taller than her. “What is your name, oh charming princess?” She closed her eyes slowly and drew in a gentle breath. “Aqua-Bella.” Beautiful water. The boy offered her another smile yet as he spoke. “Spellbinding name. I am called Vincent.” As they gazed past the setting sun and ocean, they each contemplated their lives with each other. As if a mysterious cloud had swept by and blended their dreams together. It hadn’t been long before they had to say good-bye. The Goddess promised the boy she would be in the same place at the same time the next day. The boy had smiled and nodded, he would be there as well. And so, they continued seeing each other. One day, the boy had lifted her chin and gazed deep into her eyes. He had then leaned in and kissed her deeply, pulling her closer to him. She had kissed him back softly as she put her arms around his neck. They were undoubtedly happy. Days flew by and the couple felt as if they were on the top of the world. No one could bring them down from Cloud Nine. Until her past came lingering by, and her already defined future got near. “I am a Sea Goddess.” She told him one day as they watched the sunset. The boy laughed and kissed her forehead softly. “You are my Sea Goddess.” She shook her head as she looked up at him with a frank expression. “No, I belong to the Sea and to the Sea only.” The boy gave her a curious glance. “And why do you think this?” The Goddess was becoming exasperated, he wouldn’t believe her unless she showed him. “Don’t worry my love. I shall prove it to you someday.” Satisfied, the boy rested his head against hers as they continued to gaze into space. A few nights later, she called on him using the waves, and he answered her call. “This, is where my true power doth lays.” She smiled and brought about the current, turning the water into ice. She called on the animals that were under her realm, and brought them to him. She controlled the way the waves crashed into the smooth shore, and let new life reach the coast. But when she looked to the boy, her world came crashing down. “Witch! Sorceress!” He yelled as he took a couple of steps back. “You’ve enchanted me to believe you were good, but now, I see your true form.” Her expression saddened as her vision became blurred from sudden tears. She turned away from him and ran to the ocean, getting deeper and deeper into the forbidding waters. Her cry was heard as she pursued to drown herself. The waves crashed hard against her body, as her soul’s pain became unbearable. She used everything in her power to get rid of a life filled with misery. It became impossible. The Goddess couldn’t end her life no matter how hard she tried. She rose high into the air as a wave appeared under her feet. The boy was still on the shore, staring. She extended her hand to him, a hand covered in blood. As he sought to know what it was she held, she opened her palm and showed him her heart. “It belongs to you, yet you would not accept it.” Her voice resonated in the rocks and the sea as she faced away from him and threw her heart at the ocean. “It will always belong to you.” With that, the Goddess went into the Sea, her mesmerizing prison. From then on, she cries day and night, bringing the place torrential rains once in a while. The boy, who never grew old, gazed from his house into the Sea. Knowing her heart belonged to him, and that it was now lost. No one knows if he regrets it, no one knows if he still loves her. But the Gods and the Goddesses from above know, the Sea has become a dangerous place for young boys.
Waiting, waiting, I am a-waiting for your return. Isn’t my suffering enough? Now hear my mermaid’s song, it seduces you back to this place. But let’s face it, the end is near, and there’s no stopping me on my way to the grave.
To be continued…?
