She awoke to the chime of the grandfather clock down the hall; she blinked several times to clear her blurred vision. She shifted in the bed and reached for the clock resting on the nightstand to see what time it was. She didn’t go very far when she realized that someone had a hold on her; she looked over her shoulder and saw him.
His breathing was even and deep, his light brown hair was tousled and the bangs stood straight up. She smiled to herself and forgot about the clock as she turned to face him. She nestled under the covers and scooted closer to him as his grip slightly tightened. She reached out a hand and smoothed down the bangs, which refused to obey. Her gesture caused him to stir and he opened one eye, “You okay Ayanai?” He yawned as he spoke and she couldn’t help but smile, “Yes I’m fine. The clock’s chimes just woke me up, go back to sleep.” Without an argument he nodded his head and leaned over to kiss her lightly on the forehead.
Minutes turned to hours and she still lay awake, maybe getting something to drink will help me to sleep. She twisted around and gently removed Koenma’s hand that was draped loosely over her side. She crawled out from under the covers and reached for her robe hanging by the bed. Securing the ribbon around the cloth she slid into her slippers and walked downstairs to the kitchen. She took down one of the coffee mugs that hung on the rack and poured her self some milk.
She sipped at her drink as she went back up the stairs; when she had reached the bedroom she stopped in front of the open window that sat across from the bed. She placed the mug on the window sill and took a deep breath of the cool, crisp night breeze that lightly brushed her hair.
He shifted in the bed and she turned around to watch him get comfortable, I have taken so many lives yet I am able to sleep soundly with the warmth of another being. I don’t deserve this; I shouldn’t be rewarded for my crimes. Tears began to form at the corner of her eyes and she tried to force them down to no avail. The guilt that she had laid tucked safely away now erupted out of her like a volcano forever denied its right to explode. Her legs gave out and her arms went numb, the mug she had held fell to the floor with a loud crash. Crumbling in on her self she followed the mug to the floor, the impact drowned out by her cry of despair.
The noise caused him to jump out of the bed and he rushed over to her; ignoring the pieces of the mug sprawled out over the floor he sat down and wrapped his arms around her. Hoisting her up into his lap he rocked her gently as she continued to cry. “Shhh, it’ll be alright. I’m here now.” The two sat on the floor for at least half an hour before her crying had completely subsided. They held each other for a little while longer when she suddenly pushed away from his hold and wrapped her arms around herself. She now sat with her back to him.
“What’s wrong?” he crawled over to her on his hands and knees. “I have killed so much for so long; I don’t know why I’m rewarded by having you with me every night.” She clenched her jaw and squeezed her eyes shut as more tears threatened to pour down. “You deserve so much better, I don’t know how you can live knowing you sleep with a murderer.” She began to cry again when she was suddenly spun around and pressed close to his face. The sudden kiss had startled her at first but she eventually let her guard completely down and welcomed his loving embrace.
He pulled away from her and leaned his forehead onto hers looking into her amber eyes, “The reason why I can live with you is because I know you’re not a murderer. You’re Ayanai and I love you the way you regardless of what you’ve done.” He pressed his lips against hers once again and they fell asleep entwined in each other’s arms.
