I sat there remembering how Durnel had picked me up off the side of the road, he asked me who I was and where I was from, but I couldn’t answer. So he brought me back to the inn, bathed me, fed me, and gave me a room to sleep in. Durnel told me I said nothing for months, almost as if I had forgotten how to speak, and then little by little, word by word I started learning how. It wasn’t long before I learned I needed to earn my keep; Durnel had me help by cleaning rooms and clearing tables, but once I found the stables that became my primary duty. Durnel was amazed at how I knew exactly what to do without being told. The first time I set foot in the stables I walked straight over to where the grain was kept and proceeded to feed and groom the horses. I don’t know how I knew what to do, it was almost as if someone was placing the thoughts straight into my head and I just followed their directions.
I was startled out of my thoughts by a shadow falling over me, and I realized that the spot in the river I had been staring at was now occupied by a reflection. After a moment it hit me, I knew that reflection, it was the stranger I had seen earlier. He was now standing behind me. As I turned to look at him I found that he had been standing there staring…
...he was staring at me.
