Naruto dubbed
Recently, I've been looking through the anime forums here on Gaia and have found a tremendous amount of people upset at the idea of Naruto being dubbed and aired on Toonami. All of their complaints I have found to be biased and without basis. It is beginning to frustrate me to no end so I made a rather lengthy post to counter any superficial argument they have come up with. Here is my post

I'm going to address this to all the people complaining about the dub. And just as a warning, this is a long post. If you don't have the patience to read it, you probably don't have the patience to listen to it either. Im going to assume the major reasons you disapprove of it is
1) You think you won't be able to get free (illegal) fansubs anymore
2) You think they will do a bad job dubbing the voices
3) You think they will cut out all the blood and nudity, change names, genders, or storylines, or just edit it poorly overall
4) You think it needs to be put on Adult Swim and not Toonami

so lets break this down

1) You think you won't be able to get free (illegal) fansubs anymore

Do any of you know the reason that fansubs exist? I'll give you a hint, its not so all of america can get free anime and never have to support the people working so hard to put it out. Fansubs exist to in order to make a series known in order to increase its popularity across the globe in hopes that some day a company will pick it up, license it, and distribute it among the masses. Once a series is licensed, that doesnt mean the death of a good fansub, it means they did their job. They helped spread an anime enough that it caught the corporate eye. But don't worry, when the real fansub groups who know their place stop subbing a licensed series, tons of fans just like you decide to keep it going because you want your free illegal anime. And don't get me wrong, I download plenty of fansubs. However, my intent is to one day actually own these series.

Many of you may say, "well its not illegal to download fansubs until its licensed, so now they made it illegal for us". Unfortunately, thats wrong. Fansubs are always illegal, they are simply tolerated before a series is licensed because its basically like free promotion. It gets the word out and japanese companies hope that due to the increased popularity, more people like you will come forward and support them.

2) You think they will do a bad job dubbing the voices

How many of you understand japanese? Fluently? What evidence do you have that one japanese voice actor is better than some other english voice actor? Is it because they are better actors, or is it simply that japanese sounds so cool? The truth is, without understanding the nuances and subtleties of a language, there is no real way to determine its quality. Granted, its understandable that after having watched 130+ episodes, you've gotten used to each character's japanese voice. Naturallly, an english voice wont sound exactly the same. That's because the intanation and vernacular of english are not japanese, they're english. If an english voice actor said a line with the exact same intanation as a japanese actor, I think it would sound very weird. Try it. Next time you watch a subtitled anime, read a subtitle the exact same way the japanese character did, changing the pitch and tone of your voice at the exact same time as the japanese voice. Does it sound funny and unnatural? Probably. Just because an english voice is going to sound different, that doesn't make it wrong.

3) You think they will cut out all the blood and nudity, change names, genders, or storylines, or just edit it poorly overall

This is one of the complaints that bugs me the most. First of all, how much nudity do you see in Naruto? After 130+ episodes, I'd say about... none. The Sexy no Jutsu is covered by clouds in the manga, the anime, and even edited more in one of the japanese video games. And even then how often does it appear in the series? Maybe in 4 episodes...less perhaps... And besides, Viz has specifically stated that Sexy no Jutsu will be left untouched, as well as the perverted characters like Jiraiya. Ok then, what about blood? Because there is blood in all sorts of scenes its all going to be taken out of the series right? No, Viz has released a statement saying that at most they will be taking out only excessive blood. That means all blood right? No again, by excessive, they refer to blood that serves no point to the storyline. There's a lot of blood in Naruto's hand stabbing scene but guess what, that blood serves a purpose and symbolizes something meaningful. Thus it will not be removed, as again is stated specifically by Viz. But they're going to take the blood out of all the fight scenes because it just sits there right? Wrong again. The only blood that Viz intends to remove is spurting or gushing blood that is not critical to plot. But wait, thats the only part of the series you guys like right? the gushing spurting blood. Guess what guys, it will all be there on the uncut, dual language for that matter, DVDs that have already been confirmed for release. Viz has already expressed their intent to keep the story and characters as true to the original as is humanly possible. That doesnt mean their going to throw edits left and right to fit every standard the FCC could hope for. That means they are going to try to cut every corner imaginable to get around FCC limitations. For instance, the projected time slot for Naruto to be aired is 10:00 PM saturday evenings. FCC regulations say that after 10:00, cable channels can air shows with a TV-PG rating.
Here is what is allowed under a TV-PG rating according to MPAA
Quote:
TVPG Parental Guidance Suggested.
This program contains material that parents may find unsuitable for younger children. Many parents may want to watch it with their younger children. The theme itself may call for parental guidance and/or the program contains one or more of the following: moderate violence (V), some sexual situations (S), infrequent coarse language (L), or some suggestive dialogue (D).

Judging from that, I'd say about everything can be left in. Naruto only has moderate violence, its not a blood and guts anime like say Kite or something, so stop saying that Naruto is for mature audiences. There are sexual situations and suggestive dialogue, but they are pretty sparse and infrequent, not like the entirity of an episode or anything, so that fits the bill too. And language, the cursing that all you guys love so much from fansubs is just that, from the fansubs. Japanese is not a dirty language like English. There is no real japanese equivalent to "********" or "s**t" really. You might be able to translate it that way, but overall, every japanese word is a japanese word from a japanese idea. Curse words only have the power that a culture gives it. The reason "s**t" is considered to be a worse word than "crap" is simply because American society deems it so. They mean the exact same thing and are used the exact same way, in all contexts. You have all just been socialized to think that s**t is a cooler word.

4) You think it needs to be put on Adult Swim and not Toonami
Most everyone who wants Naruto to be put on Adult Swim wants that because they believe Naruto is a mature show for mature audiences. In reality it is not. Not in japan, not here. I am willing to bet that the majority of Naruto's fans are in the 12-17 age range. Do any of those fall under the category adult? No. Are there fans 18 and up? Of course. Are there fans younger than 12? Of course. Do they make up the majority of the target audience? No. Toonami has of late been moving towards a more teen oriented program. With the addition of Uncut DBZ to their saturday line up, it is clear what kind of intentions they have for Anime. If Toonami can show DBZ uncut, why do you think they'll butcher Naruto when its put right next to uncut DBZ? Is it because you think Naruto is much more gory and bloody, or perverted even, than DBZ? Because its not. DBZ has blood, DBZ has guts, DBZ has perversion. Stop worrying so much. Sorry to compare you're beloved series to one of such a calibur as DBZ, but unfortunately, Naruto isn't really that much different. Does that mean Naruto is a bad show? Of course not.

I challenge anyone who disagrees with what I've said to prove me wrong. Please. I want you all to think critically and figure either why it is that Naruto will be bad or why it is that you can't find a substantial reason to think it will be bad anymore. Just like everyone else, I have flaws, I might be mistaken about something. So go out and do some research to prove me wrong. That does not mean respond by saying "OMGWTF u r teh los0r " or "naruto is going to suck cuz I know it is" or "noooooo they're going to butcher it". That will only prove to me your ignorance. Give me substantial evidence to change my mind and maybe i will.

    1) You think you won't be able to get free (illegal) fansubs anymore 2) You think they will do a bad job dubbing the voices 3) You think they will cut out all the blood and nudity, change names, genders, or storylines, or just edit it poorly overall 4) You think it needs to be put on Adult Swim and not Toonami You make good arguments to some that has changed my mind but not completely, a lot of the things you say are promising, but here is my opinion. 1)Its not the fact that its free, its just the fact that fansubs are usually very good quality subs, I mean compared to what I've seen in the subs that Viz puts out, yes I have compared them before, I've compared fansubs to some of the subs on the liscensed DVD's that Viz puts out, and in some circumstances they are better quality. Not only quality, its the fact that many Naruto Fans don't want to be left behind. It's like how many fans are on the most recent episodes around episode 140-150, no one wants the fansubs to just stop and then have to wait until the English version, and English DVD's catch up, which will take the minimum of a few years to catch up, and by the time they do, who knows, the series may already be over in Japan. Sure you may be thinking, oh we're just all impatient, but its the same with the scanlations. At the rate the English translations are going, they won't catch up to the 30+ mangas of Naruto for quite sometime, and well I guess we are all just impatient because many of us fans want to keep up with the Japanese releases, and I for one am very thankful to those fansubs and scanlations that let's me be able to read/watch along with the series as it is released in Japan. I know it must be very hard work for Viz to translate and get the manga and anime out English, and I respect them for that, but that doesn't mean I don't still want the most recent episodes and chapters. Many fans I know will definitely buy the liscensed DVDs when Viz releases them, but does it make it wrong for them to continue watching it on fansub? 2)Okay, so many fans do not know Japanese, but just listening to the Japanese voices its just amazing, I mean, reading the subs isn't enough, you try just reading subs with the sound turned off while Watching Naruto, its not quite as fulfilling. And perhaps it is a biased opinion, but for me, its like, when you read the manga, you build a character in your head, and how they might sound like to you. I for one have only watched around 50 episodes of Naruto, not the recent ones, but I have been keeping up with the scanlations and I have ideas in my head on how characters like Itachi and Obito would sound like. To me, the voice of Naruto in English is just too raspy, and the voice actor is trying to hard to make it sound cartoony and not like a 12 year old boy (or how ever old Naruto is) But this argument could be fought in many ways, because frankly, everyone has a preference on what they think, who should sound like what and such. 3)True, not much nudity is seen in Naruto so I didn't really expect much to come from it, just that they may put a bathing suit on Naruto's Oiroke no Jutsu, which that didn't and I think that Viz did a pretty good job on the edits, in my opinion, the nosebleeds are necessary for the humor of the pervertedness, but since many may not get that joke, it is true that it isn't necessary, but then I wonder, what will they do when Haku dies? Or just what will they do with Haku? when Haku is killed by Kakashi, it truly is a lot of blood, will they edit that out or not? Because in fact, it symbolizes just how much pain Haku went through, just how much of a painful death he went through to save Zabuza, to me that is an important symbol, I mean how will they know he is dead if they edit out too much blood? How will Viz keep such a bloody scene period. And on that note, I noticed you left out gender changing, Its hard to say if they will change Haku's gender or not. Perhaps because of what he was wearing when he talked with Naruto in the forest, or maybe because of his nail polish, this has yet to be put to my attention on whether they will live him a guy or change it so that he is a girl in the U.S. And if they do change his gender that would also give confusion to the U.S. translated manga. And if Haku is in danger does that mean Orochimaru and Itachi are too? Basically there are so many unanswered questions that no one really knows the answers to until the episodes pass which really keeps this topic still yet to be argued opon. 4) Its true that in Japan the range of age for Naruto fans differ from some of the fans here, but it is also pretty different in Japan judging from how they edit the anime here. I mean nudity, violence, just many things are different there comparably to what is shown here in the U.S. The cultures are different so how could you compare the age groups? In the U.S. nudity and such is very rarely tolerated, so is gory scenes, sexual innuendos, etc. And it may be different on how they see things in Japan, I mean they have vending machines that give out women's underwear, so I'm pretty sure that symbolizes some difference in how they view certain things and perhaps how mature they're 12 year olds may be. In my opinion, it seems that their 12 year olds are about as mature as 13-14 year olds in the U.S. but then again who knows. And if anything, since Naruto is on Toonami, you already know that many kids who are younger than 12 watch it, but its just that though Naruto is basically directed at around 12-17 year olds, its not exactly a kiddie show either, and to many fans, they are willing to stay up and have Naruto on adult swim to be able to watch at least the original opening or ending such as what adult swim does for many of the other anime they air, to my view, it seems that Viz would only lose some of the older fans for putting it on Toonami, but then again that's just my opinion. Well I did listen to your opinion, but my views haven't really changed much, perhaps I am biased, and just a bitter bitching fangirl, but its just whatever to me, you can go on the way you think about it, which is somewhat optimistic in my opinion, kudos to you, but in all honesty, I suppose I do hate many of the things Viz has done to Naruto so far, but mostly dreading what they may do to the series in the future, but who knows what will happen, I guess staying hopeful on what they may do to Haku is the best I can do right now. In many ways I respect a lot of the things you said, but that still doesn't change my overall opinion and the way I view things on Naruto.
