Artemis Fowl ran down an empty street as fast as his legs would carry him, his black suit smeared in blood. "Why...?"

*flashback*

Artemis pushed through the packed-in crowd, desperetly trying to reach his friend. "Minerva!" He broke through the line of people and collapsed to his knees beside Minerva's trembling form. "Minerva! No!" He lifted her head in his arm and took her hand with his pale one. She looked up at him, blood running down the edge of her mouth and her eyes out of focus. "A-Artemis?" An un-checked tear ran down his cheek and he squeezed her hand. "Yes." She smiled. "I-i'm cold." He hugged her close as Butler and his parents walked up behind him. "Oh, Minerva." She grimaced and he leaned closer to hear what she had to say. Her lips trembled as she whispered into his ear. "I love you..." Her body went limp and her head lolled over to lean against his chest, wiping blood on his jacket. His eyes went wide, his hands trembling. "No." Butler came up behind him and set his hand on the teen's shoulder. "No!" His skinny shoulders shook with sobs as his mother ran up behind him, his father right behind her. "No..." The ambulance workers rushed around the body, quickly covering it in a white bag and dragging it away. Artemis sat, frozen, as his mother bent down and hugged him.

*moderntime*

In Northern Italy, the cities were bright with flashing police lights and lamps hung over doorways. Artemis ran down the empty sidewalks and grabbed a nearby pole, jolting him to a stop. He leaned his forehead on the cool metal, his face stained in tears. "M-Minerva..." The clear night sky shone with stars as he grasped the pole with one hand and let the other drop to his side, his eyes squeezed shut. "Why?"
