Misadventure One; Rhia
Quote:
...I never knew that anyone could touch my soul the way that you have... I never really imagined that I had a soul left, to be honest. I simply thought that I was a paper machee body, an empty egg shell, beautiful, pale, and empty...

I sighed, leaning as far back in my chair as I could without falling out. This was the type of story that I loved. I could almost imagine that I was the main character, falling in love with someone that I could never have dreamed existed.

Rhia laughed, and Mrs. Eversliegh scowled down the length of her long, bird-like nose. I tried not to roll my eyes, but knowing that it would be impossible to resist in a few moments. Rhia was in one of those moods again.

I slid my novel quietly under the book we were supposed to be reading, hoping that Rhia hadn't drawn attention to our table. Surely enough, Mrs. Eversliegh was staring at me in utter disgust.

"Ellune? What, precisely, led you to beleive that recreational reading was allowed during my class lectures?"

I was spared a sputtering, embarrassing defense by Rhia. From her seat across from me she popped her gum so loud that I jumped, my heartbeat racing.

As easy as that, I was erased from the beaky Statistic Teacher's mind.

Her hair is dark red, that natural, gorgeous, thick red-brown that I would have killed for. Combined with about the darkest green eyes and pale, pale skin, and a sharp temper, you would have Rhia. She was the bane of my existance, and the closest thing I had to a real friend.

"Rhia! this is third time today you have interrupted me and I will not tolerate it! This is..."

My mind wandered, sure that she was going to have an apoplexy right there in the middle of the floor. She would fall and hit her head on the projector, spilling all of those colored erasable markers, and I--

"Detention. You and Ellune both!"

I blinked my eyes quickly, trying desperatly to comprehend what was going on around me. Oh, yes, Rhia. Always Rhia...

I nodded demurely while Rhia raged.

"No! I can't stay for a detention today! I have Drama, and the play is coming up! and I've already signed the papers to be in Notebook Committee, I can't!"

I immediately saw where this was going, and my face went pale when Mrs. Eversliegh spun to face me entirely.

"Well then, Ellune, you serve a one hour detention alone today, and Rhia will serve one tomorrow. Done." She turned her back on me, never even thinking that I might have a disagreement to voice. To Rhia she gave her most sour face. Done meant done, it seemed.

I might have felt a sense of relief if the bell had rung, like in the movies, but I'm not that lucky. Instead I had to sit for the next half-hour dreading detention and dying to know what happened next in my book...

The bell disrupted my daydreams, and I scrambled to put everything away before anyone came by and saw the book that I had been reading. It was dark blue, and the title was black, and bold. Infinite , it read, and though no one could know that inside it was a romance novel with vampires and all of the color that my life lacked, a part of me was too ashamed to be reasonable.

We slipped out of the class in the middle of the crowd, Rhia and I close beside eachother but not touching or talking. In my own quiet way I was furious with her for drawing attention to me, and then getting me detention. I suppose I would have been able to live with it, If I hadn't been sentenced to serve my term alone.

When we were in the hall, light pouring in despite the rain clouds, she grabbed my arm and spun me to face her. What a pair we mst have appeared, her bold beauty and my quiet self. I was like a dark little rain cloud, and she was like the sun. The light spilling in the hall gave testimony as to which always won out in the end.

"Come on, Ells, you know that I didn't mean to get you in trouble. But, I mean, Cory was making faces and the note that she passed me was so funny that I couldn't resist--Oh, come on, don't be mad... I'm in trouble, too, you know?"

I brushed a strand of dark, midnight hair from my face, knowing how foolish I looked beside her. I suppose she caught my train of thought, because she smiled in a cat-like, totally Rhia way.

"Look, after detention come to the drama rom. I'm head of wardrobe, and I'm going to have to stay late tonight. No one will be there, just you and an empty stage, and the lights..."

I took in a sharp, hopeful breath. It was what I'd always wanted, and she knew it...

"Fine. But you are not forgiven." My voice was stern, and she knew I meant it, but in her own way, she knew that I wasn't going to abandon her anymore, and in Rhia terms, that meant that all was right in the world.
