I remember.
I always used to hear my dad talking about the "good ol' days" when this city was a place full of life, he always said
"Xander, this city used to have excitement around every corner, there were places where you could see all of the city, with it's different colored buildings. I remember when we were free. Not this... this... Totalitarianism!"
The changes had happened gradually, certain freedoms were taken away (gay marrige was the first). Most people didn't really mind. They accepted their cage. Those who didn't, well, let's say they were never seen in public again.
I was on a street corner one day, when all of a sudden, I see a tall man with a brown overcoat walk up to me, he said,
"Come to this address at midnight, I haven't much time. I'll see you there." he said as he handed me a peice of paper
he then walked around the corner and disappeared!
So I went, snuck out around 11:50 because I thought it may take me a while to get there. So once I got there, I saw a group of people sitting around a large wooden table. One of them stood up, I recognised his voice as the man who "Invited" me,
"Welcome Xander, we have been expecting you."
"How do you know my name?" I asked, "And who are you guys?"
"We have what are called Scouts, they find anyone with abilities and report on them." I was admittedly caught off guard, " As for our cause. Well, we will tell you that later."
"So what about my abilities?"
Someone else answered this time "Our scouts discovered your abilities when you were 3. But we waited until you were 15 to tell you. Try snapping your fingers." When I snapped my fingers, I immediately saw a tiny flame spring up on my finger!
I was compleatly freaked out, I couldn't remember the last time I snapped my fingers, yet I knew exactly what to do, and I didn't even feel the flame hovering just above my finger.
The guy who told me to do this, with his pale face and wiry body said, "You have the gift of fire. The details are sketchy but we know you can create fire and are immune to its heat, as well as being able to put it out"
The man in the robe that brought me here spoke, "I assume your father has told you about how this city used to be full of life. Anyone who didn't accept were banished. We help those who have been banished. And we will eventually bring life back to this city!"
I put out my flame and stared at him with an open jaw, "But that's treason!"
"Yes, and if you wish to decline our offer to join you, we will wipe your memories of us from your brain. Count yourself lucky!" He said after I had a face of protest on, "We used to have to kill those who declined!"
The man with the pale face then said, "Wether or not you wish to join, come back here tommorrow night with your decision"
So I went home and slept.
