Prologue- The Assassin

Moonlight embarked from above the dark wall of buildings, lighting the narrow ally halfway, while everything else blended into the darkness of the night, save the silver lining on the edges where the light reflected off the solid edges. The town seemed like a maze of black and silver as everything in the shadow contrasted highly against the illuminated rays of moonlight. The sky itself was dark with only a lonely moon shone brilliantly in exclusive splendor. Without any trees or clouds, the passing wind was ignored and blocked by the ebony body of the sleeping town
.
A solitary set of set of rushed footsteps echoed through the half lit avenue, the angled ray of light showed the left diagonal section of a swiftly passing black figure. His arm secured a vague object to his chest while the remains of his other stiff arm blended into the shadows. The pale patch of his skin ,appeared luminescent in the light, between the darks of the cloth wrapped the bottom of his face; wrapping around to cover his head, leaving only a few highlights of
middle-toned locks to peer out. As he dashed in and out of the light, it became apparent that in his right arm he carried a glistening blade, thin and curved; the sharpened side flashed glints of moonlight, deadly judging by its luster. Soon more steps followed rhythmically, and the figure quickened his, swerving to slip into another ally, but ended up crashing into a stack of crates. Picking himself up, even as he crashed, he didn’t look back to see his pursuers gain ground, instead he made sure what he was carrying was secure and then disappeared in the shadows in speed.

` The chasers followed after, losing sight of him but continued on persistently, splitting off into different directions. Two went forward as one drifted into the same patch as its target. He reached the dead end with a surprise, standing still to listen for any sudden movements, the paranoia apparent in his very movements. It was as if time stood still; water dripped from a rain gauge on to a barrel with steadily. Slowly the still figure began turn, the wind whistled as a single cloud loomed over the moon, draping everything in the blackness of night. He could scarcely begin to grasp his view and the black silhouette before him had swung. The cloud parted and he moonlight glistened from the metal of the blade, pure and white; as too did the blade maser’s eyes, like the moon itself gray lining and center bordering the light. Cornered, they hunter was now the prey, the brief moment of consciousness passed as quickly as his realization of not being able to make a sound. He was finished in two moves by the blade, one to cut through his throat and voice; the other to wipe off the blood from the blade.

The figure now blended back into shadows, targeting the remaining two lurkers, but as he crossed between two allies it became apparent that he was the one being targeted. He was cornered, huntsmen at each end both were too far out of range to attack with their projectile weapons, but they wouldn’t be for long. The tip of the swordsman’s foot twisted, feeling the bricked ally beneath him, he tightened the grip on his weapon. He charged towards the closest chaser who was attacking with his set of throwing blades. Metal clashing with metal, the projectiles were flung aside by the blade as its bearer advanced, towards thrower. He swerved and curved down with agility low enough to dodge an anticipated attack, the knife flew past missing him just barely giving him enough time to lift his bade up for a deadly blow. He cut threw right under the pursuer’s arm, blood sprayed as a main artery was cut killing the knife bearer in moments but not before he managed to make a feeble attempt to harm his attacker, tarring the swordsman’s black attire to insert a fresh cut on his arm carrying the box.

Wiping his blade of blood with a whip, the swordsman continued running up the narrow pathway, the other now only moments behind him, the runner cut the corner into a small dead end ally. With no shock on his face, he slowly turned around and lifted his arms up in surrender, dropping his blade and holding the box up with one hand. The other now came into the ally, confused on whether or not to attack; he held a short shining weapon on one hand and motioned the swords man with the other to hand over the box. Taking the hint, the defenseless man threw the box to the other, who considered he box and appeared to decide between attack or return. But the decision of the hound was never carried out, for within a short instant an arrow shot through the back of his neck and he fell on the floor with a thud. Unaffected, the other figure, picked up his blade, and walked over to the dead man. He then resumed to pull the arrow out of the dead man’s neck; succeeding he placed it in the folds of his clothes and skewered threw the carcasses where the lethal wound was.

Finished, he wondered whether or not if he should take the box, judging it to be nothing of his interest, the swords man sheathed his sword and slipped into a hole in the corner of street, leading underground, landing with a small splash in the shallow water. He walked forwarded a couple of underground blocks. It was darker than the surface, with light escaping in only through the few window-wholes lining the streets. The underground water system was undermined and overlooked, making it the perfect way to lose stalkers. He waited before the largest area of light and not long after a voice called from the nearest corner.

“Aren’t you glad I look after you? “ came a good-humored comment from another figure dressed similar to the swords man, only hey carried a bow in one hand and his face exposed, with a pony tail sticking out from behind.

“You’re late.” The younger man replied with fake coldness, taking the coverings off from his face, revealing a smirk.

The taller man took out large rolled up parchment from his pockets.

“The ‘tripping over barrels to hide the cargo’ routine. Genius” He snickered and patted the other on the back as they walked up towards a new light coming from a newly opened door from above.

They were pulled up into an empty room and took their boots off, which were then destroyed in the case someone were to track them. Standing relaxed they nodded to all the precautions, touching nothing with their bare hands, making sure to stay on water so that their trail was lost, keeping their face covered… so on and so forth. Now in the light it was easy to see that both young men were not above 20. The older being slightly taller with a good build and extenuated futures, he wore a leather bandana like thing around his long hair to keep his bangs out from over his eyes, while the rest of his red-orange hair was tied in a long pony tail. His eyes were emerald green, though currently bored, still contained a spark of humor in them. All in all he was a handsome fellow

At his side, the young swords man carried a stern but placid decorum. He wasn’t ruggedly built and seemed more boyish than manly. His phantom white eyes stood out even against his skin. He worked on attaching a little pair of chained wings to the edge of hilt of his sword as the other worked on explaining the information in the parchment to the assistant woman leaving out with it. His light brown hair didn’t seem to fit his image, and as soon as he room was clear of just the two men, it was clear why. The young man pulled at the mop of brown pulling it down to reveal light hair that could’ve almost been white. He ruffled through it a bit.
“ So why are you wearing that again” Asked the older, by ‘that’ he clearly meant the wig

“Because then they would easily be able to tell me apart.” Replied the other; satisfied with the fresh air and readjusting the wig in his hand. “How many other people do you know with straight white hair?” He inquired and placed it on his head, frowning at it nonetheless.

Someone knocked on the door and announced that after a moment of rest, they were called into have a meeting and get their next assignment. They seemed to have left but then another voice added on
“ Oh and Caleb, “ came the foreboding female voice, making the older male perk up with an uncomfortably terrified look. “ I better not catch you ‘accidently coming into the girls changing room’ just because you have blindfold on.” She left muttering something along the lines of ‘perverted a*****e’.

“Yeah, Caleb.” Teased the younger, not being affected by the scowl of the other, having had already put his blindfold on. Clearly the bossed didn’t want you knowing who they were, but he could see fine through the thin fabric, it was actually beneficial to him since they hid his eyes. Finished with things he left his sword with the rest of his belongings and headed out to the Bosses’ office.

The briefing went as usual, they talked about what he did right and what were at stake, he didn’t care. It mattered nothing to him if the people beside him just spontaneously exploded. He really couldn’t care less, just wanted something to do a feeling of purpose… his trail of thought was interrupted.
“What? You can’t just separate us, we’re a team!” Caleb was complaining in a childishly angry tone opposing something the other assumed to be about them getting separate assignments. Not like it mattered, he was the one that did most of the work while Caleb took the credit. Normally, he would just dismiss it as an act of laziness, but he was the only thing Caleb had close to a family, so the younger supposed that it might be genuine. He reconsidered, it was definitely because Caleb was worried that he would have to do more work, this made him sigh mentally.

Caleb’s rants finally came to an end when a cool female voice cut in with “Well then, that is sad, and here I was looking forward to being partners with you.” Her seductive voice was enough to make Caleb overlook the fact that he didn’t know what she looked like.

“Well bro, it looks like it’s the time when a man has to choose between his duty and his desire,” He started with a valiant tone, “Now, as much as I want to be by my little brother’s side,” He continued “ My duty comes first. For how can I look after you knowing that I let justice…” He was cut off by the mission briefer.

“Yes, very touching Caleb, now if you will follow …” He dragged both Caleb and the female operative out of the room leaving the other and the three bosses in the room. The Other wondered if it was possible to notice his eyes rolling under the blindfold... it seemed redundant.

He stood casually, waiting for the bosses to realize that he was not one for making conversations that were not in his benefit. When the finally realized the matter, they started.

“So you’ve made quite a reputation as an assassin, young man” One commented appraisingly.

“Yes yes… and at such a young age..” Another started, started compassionately but a serious gruffer tone cut in.

“Getting to the point, we need you to kill this here ‘Dark Angel’ or whatever else she feels like being called” She spoke in detest.

“What the problem is, you see “The first voice explained. “ There is a powerful figure that has immerged, a young girl of rouge nature who single handedly slays what we once considered to be unstopable.” He trailed off vaguely.
“Yes, and we offered her to come and join us several times…. But she refused… and even killed one of our operatives… there is no other choice…” continued the second in a soft tone.

“Choice? No one cares what the choice is, the point is the job and your job is to kill this stupid girl” Finished the stern lady. “ Locations and information will be given to you, remember to keep our usual conditions. Now get going.” She snapped and shooed him off.

He nodded silently and walked back into the empty room that was now dark without synthetic light, pausing to look at the approaching dawn glowing in through the window.

Nothing really mattered anymore, at the end of the day… so why should it matter in the beginning?
