Postlude: A Play, for the Moment... by Jerome McDonough. My FAVORITE play ever. I'm currently going crazy about it again, so I'm going to tell you about why it's awesome. =P
Postlude is set in the future. No specific future, it may be a hundred years from now or maybe just tomorrow. Basically, it focuses on a group of people who have survived the destruction, disease, and general hardship of the end of the world. The post-apocalyptic feel of this play is astounding, I can't even describe it, just trust me it's great.
There are three basic groups: The Family, The Scavengers, and The Caesars. The Family, basically, consists of the good guys: Patteren, Madra, and Virghu, eventually joined by Hulaf, Diram, Nanchet, and Innoce. They are all just trying to survive. The Caesars (King Jackal, Despot, and the Temptress) are power-hungry and self-proclaimed "rulers" of this new world. Lastly, The Scavengers (which includes Licentious, Covet, and Muerta) are these creepy, subhuman, cannibalistic people kept as tools by The Caesars to threaten their "subjects." Then of course there is the mysterious Silent Woman who appears at various points throughout the play, invisible to the other characters on stage. Her very important role is not fully understood until the end of the play. ;3
Patteren: the father.
Madra: the mother.
Virghu: the hopeful daughter.
Hulaf: the diseased man.
Diram: the flaming woman.
Nanchet: the soldier.
Innoce: the child.
Jackal: the king.
Despot: the military leader.
Temptress: the ruler through bribery.
Licentious: the cruel killer.
Covet: the greedy killer.
Muerta: the sneaky killer.
Anyway. Check it out. Now, really. <3
