A Yokai is a mythological character from ancient Japanese folklore. Stories about these creatures are preserved via oral and written tradition, even in beautiful paintings! They can be good or evil. It depends on the story.
For the breedables shop, I will focus on animal yokai--things like badgers, rats, dogs, and so forth. This is because several of the beastly yokai also have human forms, which should prove interesting to many customers. These yokai are technically called 'henge' yokai--Animals with special powers. Another term, used in light of their abilities, is 'obake,' or 'shapeshifter.'
Although there are many, many yokai who only have human forms or are simply possessed items, I fear that they may be too 'weird' to spark a lot of interest in the shop. Therefore, they will be occasionally available as special events. (I love these yokai a lot, possibly more than the animal ones.)
As for semantics, they can be spelled 'yokai' or 'youkai' or even 'Yōkai,' but for the sake of simplicity we will be calling them 'yokai.' The overall story will take place in Japan, but it will not be necessary to use Japanese words or terms to play. However, if a Japanese word or term is used incorrectly, I will insist that it be corrected. So please, boys, don't run around calling yourselves 'Jason-chan' unless you want everyone to think you're an effeminate boy.
