Chapter 1
The story begins describing a boy named Ralph. Another boy comes out and Ralph calls him Piggy. Their conversation then explains their dilemma. They find a conch and call a meeting. More boys come out of thew jungle. Jack,Simon,Roger, and the twins,Sam and Eric, are introduced. Ralph the elected chief appoints Jack and his crew in charge of hunting for the newly formed community. Ralph,Jack,and Simon set out to see if the land they are on is really an island. The three boys encounter a piglet. Jack hesitates and then promises that next time he won't hesitate.
Chapter 2
Ralph calls another meeting with the conch. He sets the rules and decides that the “beastie” doesn't exist. Though the littluns' are unconvinced. Ralph then proposes the idea that they have to help the grown-ups find them. He says that they have to make a fire not finished with his talk the boys run to the mountain and try to start a fire.
