Flight of the Unicorn
Another Ellie x Scar Story

I wrote this ... I think about a week ago. Don't remember whether it was on the bus on the way home from classes or whether I was just up late one night and wanted to write, but here it is, with it's accompanying song:

Healing Him - Alternate Future

The moon was full that night. The reflections rippled and danced across the waters of the lake. The songs of crickets echoed in the air and hung there lazily where fireflies rose, flickering lights in the soft darkness.

Scar lay with his head in Ellie's lap as she read to him. His eyes were drooping inspite of his best efforts to remain awake. It wasn't that the book was boring, but Scar hadn't had a decent night's sleep in months. Nightmares of Ellie's death continued to haunt his sleep, and he had woken up several times a night for the past week. But here, out under the stars in the mild summer night, with Ellie's voice floating softly above him, all was so peaceful and calm that sleep at last settled gently upon him.

As Ellie watched his sleeping face, she wished that there was some way she could take this burden from him or share it somehow. She didn't know what to do to help him. So she started trying many different things. This was her latest plan to bring some peace to him - to spend more time than usual at the place where their courtship began and where they were married. When she read to him, she only read things that were full of light, life, and hope. She would read until he fell asleep and then just watch him and hold him as he slept, ready to comfort him if he should happen to wake up from another horrible nightmare. He could get at least 2 - 3 good hours of solid, undisturbed peace out here before it was time to go back to the base for the night. He seemed to sleep so well out there by the lake that Ellie wished they could just bring a tent and camp out here every night.

Her wedding ring sparkled in the moonlight. She gazed at it tenderly, remembering their wedding. It had been right here beside the lake on a temperate late spring evening just 2 months ago. How happy they had both been and still were! The Commander had officiated at the ceremony. Apparently he had somehow managed to get himself ordained as a minister many years before. It had been a beautiful ceremony. Ellie knew that she would never forget it - not if she lived thousands of years, and it would always be her happiest memory.

Ellie had wondered just how legal a marriage could be in which names, birthdates, etc. could not be put on a legal document. Apparently, Time Force had some sort of understanding with the countries their facilities were in. Time Force personnel could legally get married on base under the false names that they would use once they retired from Time Force and returned to live out among the general populace of the world. It felt strange to use another name in both the records and the ceremony, but the Commander had added their real names into the vows as well (though not on the written records):

"Do you Elizabeth & Ellie take ... "

That had been a thoughtful touch, and Ellie appreciated that the false identities they would be using had names that sounded vaguely similar to their real names. It would make it easier to get used to them, and he could still call her "Ellie" and just say that it was short for Elizabeth ...

................................................................................................................

Somehow, this doesn't quite feel finished. Maybe it's just one of those little slice-of-life vignettes that doesn't ever really quite feel finished, but I like it anyway. wink
