Halloween is coming, so of course I had to make my own costume. For my Alice Cooper outfit, I just didn't want to wear a big manly top hat. I also didn't want to spend a ton of money on a cute tiny one! So, I took myself to Michael's arts and crafts, and this is the result. Here's a small tutorial I made for the major construction part of the hat. VERY SIMPLE.
The hat is made from random materials found at Michael's.
What you'll need (for the construction)
1. Styrofoam Cone
2. Styrofoam Disc (small, remember this is a tiny hat!)
3. Glitter (I chose white)
4. Elmer's Spray Glue
5. Black Ribbon
6. Hot Glue Gun
7. White felt
Step one:
To make a proper hat, your styrofoam disc is just too thick. Cut your styrofoam disc in half. Cut on the side, so that you make two thinner
styrofoam discs. Toss one aside, because for this you'll only need one.
Step Two:
Cut your cone somewhere in the middle. You'll want to toss the pointy end of the cone, because for this you will only need the fat end. Observe:
Step Three:
Get a fork, dowel, or other poking object and impale your cone piece. GO OUTSIDE and spray the cone piece with the adhesive.
Step Four:
Pour All your glitter into a large dish or box top of some sort. Roll your cone piece in the glitter, using the dowel to hold it. Be sure to cover all sides. Set this aside to dry.
Step Five:
Impale, spray a roll the disc piece, just like you did with the cone piece. Set aside to dry.
Step Six:
Once the two pieces are nice and dry, take the dowels out and plug up the hot glue gun. Squirt some glue onto the smaller end of your cone piece, and stick it directly on top of the center of your disc piece...so that it looks like a tiny top hat!
Step Seven:
Get a piece of white felt from the craft store. Cut the felt to fit the bottom of your hat. This is so that the styrofoam doesn't mess with your hair. Now you have a little protection between the grabby styrofoam and your head. Cut a piece of ribbon, long enough to wrap from the top of your head, to below your chin. Glue this piece of ribbon to the bottom of the hat, and use a few straight pins to secure it even more. This is how you will be able to wear your hat, so be sure it's very secure.
Step Eight:
This step is all up to your discretion. Decorate your hat HOWEVER you want! My hat is meant for an Alice Cooper costume, so I thought it'd be cute to make a little skull. I used Black and White felt for the skull. I cut the skull from the black. From the white, made a round "lace" background to glue the skull head onto, and cut and paste the eye pieces onto the skull face. I then made a few small loopies from some of my extra ribbon, and glue them to the back of the "lace" part of my skull patch. Then, I set my little skull aside to dry, and cut a thick strip of black felt, large enough to wrap around the thinner section of the cone part of my hat. I glued the strip on, and then glued a few little feathers to the section that I deemed the "front" of my hat. I glued the skull patch on top where the feathers meet the felt strip, to cover up the glue. Here it is!
