He stared at his reflection in the mirror for the first time in a long time. The man who stared back at him- it was not him who was staring back, blue eyes dull in the light, one a bit duller than the other. His blond hair was clean and freshly cut, brushed back neatly into a rather handsome hairstyle. This was wrong- not because it felt wrong but it was wrong. This was probably the first time that the young man had been able to be alone long enough to look at himself in the mirror while he wore his finely tailored uniform. Soon he, Hans Ludwig Adler, the eldest of the Adler children, would be called in by one of his sisters or his mother for dinner with the family. Hans really had to wonder about this though, soon he would be being sent off to a foreign country for the first time, leaving his humble hometown of Nonnenhorn. He was scared to go, but he would never show that fact, no, he would never show that fact to anyone else on the vast planet that was called Earth on which he and the rest of the entire human race thrived on.

Finally he heard the door to his bedroom open, he looked back to see who his intruder was. Who he saw there did not shock him, for it was his favorite sibling and eldest sister, though she was still his junior by three years. Her name was Katrin, and she was the second Adler to have been born after Hans himself, who was in truth the second born Adler, but since he was the oldest surviving Hans was the immediate heir to the Adler family. Katrin sauntered up behind Hans, placing her hands on his shoulders to alert her elder brother to the fact that she was there, though he could probably have seen her coming from the mirror. But then again, Hans was blind in his right eye, so you could ever be sure that he knew you were there. Her brother looked very different when he was in uniform, and this was the first time that Katrin was seeing him in uniform so it was a little shocking to see him like this. ”Bruder…” Katrin whispered the word, a little unsure as to what to say to Hans at the moment. She felt her elder brother’s hand fall upon hers as she had hers resting on his shoulder.

"Was ist das, Katrin?" Hans asked the younger girl as he looked back at her with his lone working eye. Hans turned away from the mirror, removing his uniform jacket and laying it on his bed neatly before turning to his much shorter little sister. Her soft blonde hair was tied into two long blonde braids, which kept the pale golden locks out of her face. Hans smirked as he plucked a piece of string which Katrin had spun to use to tie her hair with from his sister’s braids, making the wavy blonde hair fall loose. While most would view this behavior as Hans just being mean to his younger sister, that wasn’t the case, for this was more of a show of affection than it was anything else. ”Abendessen ist fertig.” Hans nodded in understanding and began to follow his sister out his room that would soon probably become the dwelling of Lukas, who was the youngest surviving Adler child at only eleven years of age. Hans only had a room to himself because he was the eldest, and that meant he would need his personal space sooner than any of his siblings.

Hans and Katrin entered the small room with the dinner table where the rest of the Adler family was waiting. Hans’ face was burning slightly in embarrassment that he had been so consumed by the fact that this was to be his last night at home as an Adler before he became a true soldier- or whatever it was that he was assigned to become. Hans went to his usual seat which was beside his mother’s seat on the far right side of the table, so that she could serve as an extra set of eyes for Hans, who was still easily scared if he was approached from the right. Hans seated himself, glancing about the table to see his siblings and father all seated. Hans nodded a greeting to Lukas and Lorelei, his two younger siblings and then spoke to greet his father. ”Entschuldigung, Vater. " Hans murmured the words to the older man as he looked around the table once again, noting that there was no dinner there yet. That meant that Hans’ mother was about to put out the food. From the kitchen Hans could smell potatoes and wurst, and the faint scent of beer. There were one or two other smells mixed in, but the cooked potatoes and wurst were by far the strongest ones. Hans had to wonder if his mother had made his favorite meal out of knowledge of the fact that it was Hans’ last night in Nonnenhorn before going to his first barrack for the first time to meet the others in his company- some of which were his friends from school. School- some good a knowledge of mathematics, French, and English would do Hans out on the front lines of a war.

Hans had been so lost in his won thoughts over what he’d learned over his years of being in school and what he would be able to make use of (it wasn’t a lot) when he was in the army that he hadn’t noticed that his father had began speaking. Hans was being asked about when he would finally show off his full uniform to his family. Hans wasn’t shocked by this though- his father had been a soldier in the First World War, and Hans knew full well that there was still an old uniform somewhere in the Nonnenhorn home from that war. This interest that his father held with the military of Germany was not completely out of the ordinary. "Du wirstes morgan, Vater." Hans answered his father.

"Isn't he cute?"
”Katrin”

Bruder… - Brother
Was ist das, Katrin? – What is it, Katrin?
Abendessen ist fertig. – Dinner is ready.
Entschuldigung, Vater – Sorry, father.
Du wirst es morgan, vater. – You’ll get to see it tomorrow, father.
