The Pirate's Revenge: Chapter 11
"Aaahhh," I sighed, basking in the warmth of the sun, "Just what I needed ta recharge."
The Sparrow was almost seaworthy again. Eleny just had to patch up a hole or two on the foredeck. Her leopard looked up as I passed, something that sounded like a purr rumbling in its throat when I waved. Good Lord, the hole Eleny was working on was huge! How many times had we been hit in the same spot? Ten?! Blast that Bluebeard! First he kidnaps my daughter, then he blows holes in my ship! And to top it off, he'd left Tortuga while we were still stuck here for a few more hours at least, and the Apocalypse was just floating farther out in the harbor as if to taunt me!
"What in the bloomin' world is that thrice damned son of a barnacle thinkin'?" I muttered as I watched the black ship.
I suddenly felt a chill wind run its icy fingers up my back and somebody screamed. I whirled around to find the source of the sound; it took me all of a split second. Cecilia, who'd been on-deck for the past hour or so, had collapsed against the deckrail and was gripping it as if for her very life. The cause of her terror stood by the mainmast. Standing six-feet-tall, in dark captain's garb and a black tricorn hat, with a peg-leg and a beard grown from the tentacles of a alive octopus (it was kinda connected to his head) was Calypso's lover, the scourge of the seas himself--Davy Jones. I could quite understand Cecilia's fear. Talking to the Goddess of the Seven Seas was quite different from looking at the man (well, not quite fully man anymore) who she loved. While Cecilia was rooted to her spot in fear, Eleny had only looked up once and gone back to repairing the deck. I guess she'd seen death enough times to not notice when he stood mere feet from her nose.
Davy looked away from Cecilia--the nereid still terrified and trembling--and made eye contact with me. I stared calmly back and casually leaned against the railing as he clomped across the deck.
Thump-click thump-click
He halted a few paces from me.
"Captain Jaqueline Sparrow," he stated in his nasal, faintly French tone, "Do you fear death?" (Those of you who've seen Pirates of the Caribbean I or II will know that's Davy Jones's standard greeting. If not, well, now you know.)
I crossed my legs at the ankles.
"Indeed I do, Davy Jones. Indeed I do," I replied, cool as a cucumber, "That's why I'm glad we're friends...and that I got eight lives left. But I thought you'd left that life."
We both burst out laughing; my laugh light and bell-like, his booming like thunder on the stormiest seas. Whoo, the man had become majorly powerful after dying twice to be with the goddess he loved.
"Anyways," I said, immediately snapping back to cool, calm buisness, "What's up? Why're you payin' me a visit when the Sparrow's not completely offshore?"
"That black ship floating near the horizon." Davy cocked his tentacled head toward the far-off Apocalypse. "Her captain has escaped my clutches one time too many. Like your little brother in that aspect--"
"WHAT?!" I nearly fell overboard, but steadied myself before I did. "'Scuse me fer interruptin', Davy, but Arthur Bluebeard is abso-bloomin'-lutely nothin' like Jack. True, Jack's escaped from the locker once'r twice--I was there once an' you know when that was--but Bluebeard is worse than the worst buccaneer on the seas, an' he ain't even one of us! He's a bleedin' merchant!"
Davy raised a hand--or rather, lobster claw--to stop me before I launched into a full-out tirade.
"Now, now, Ms. Sparrow," he said, "I know all that. Yes, Bluebeard's a member of the merchant marines, but he's made some dark deals in the past fifteen years--most of 'em with me--and now it's time for him to pay the piper or suffer the consequences. And you know as well as I that he won't own up to his deeds. That's why I've come to you. To ask your help."
"O'course I'll help ya, Davy. What're friends for? I'll do what I can ta bring Bluebeard to ya. Even if I gotta go ashore fer months on end ta do it. Awright?"
"Aye. Thank yeh Ms. Sparrow."
The corner of my mouth quirked up in a sort of a half-smile.
"Y'do know, Davy, that yer the only bein' in all the seven seas I'd let call me that, right?"
Davy's tentacle beard rose in his version of a smile. He stepped over the decrail and onto the back of a waiting seaturtle.
"That's exactly why I do it, Ms. Sparrow," he chuckled and slowly disappeared beneath the waves, the blue water frothing where he sank.
I turned to Eleny. She'd finished mending the gigantic hole near the mizzenmast and moved on to a slightly smaller one by the helm. I strolled over and kneeled on the opposite side of the hole.
"Here," I offered, "Lemme help. Got an extra mallet?"
Eleny looked up in surprise.
"But Captain Sparrow--"
"What, nobody told ya? Ev'ryone in this crew knows how to weild a hammer an' nails. An' I know a bit more than the rest 'cuz I got stranded on an island fer a few months."
"But I--"
"'Sides, it's quicker this way. Two head're better than one."
She shrugged and handed me a mallet, and I set to work on another hole.
