I think... Well, there's a scene in my head now that we're talking about this.  Just thought of it.  This first dragon, he doesn't expect her to go into battle but only because he doesn't really care either way.  But with the second dragon, when they're all together again, they have fewer numbers because of men they lost the first time and men who have deserted out of fear of going after another dragon.  So Viper expects everyone to fight - All the men, and all the women.  He leaves Elan alone because Will gets in his face every time he tries to force the girl into battle, but he still expects Isolde, Nora, and Lia all to fight.  Lia goes to him in private and tries to decline, but he, desperate to get the stone, is furious and demands that she fight.  She begs him not to make her, and in his anger he screams "Goddamn it, Lia!" and lifts one hand as if to backhand her across the face.  Whether or not he really would is up in the air, but either way, Nora suddenly steps forward and shouts his name, stopping him.  She motions for Lia to leave, then tels Viper that while she may no longer be in his employment, they both know she can still kill him in his sleep, and don't think she won't do it.  She tells him to keep his hands off.  Lia is too valuable to be treated as a slave, and too important to people to be used the way Viper used her - as a whore.  She leaves, but not before Lia overhears what they say to each other.
