Why the hell can no one make a good, believable, yet still awesome monk or hand-to-hand combat character?
Martial Arts have, and always will be, an efficient method of fighting because it only relies on the body, no ammunition or outside forces.
That said, MOST martial arts ALSO realize theres a use for weapons besides the body, so they still teach weapons training. Not so much anymore because we've become overly protected to the point where pointing a stick at someone is a threat.
So why is it that we portray them 200 kinds of wrong?
Your fists WILL NEVER WIN against a weapon.
You can disarm and block, but if you grab or punch a blade weapon, IT WILL ******** YOUR HAND UP MORE THEN YOUR HAND WILL ******** IT UP.
Doubly so for any kind of blunt weapon.
Triply so for any kind of projectile. Arrows in a medieval setting have anywhere from 120-180 pounds of draw, creating an arrow flying over 200 feet a second, averaging more towarsd the 310 feet a second range.
Meaning every second that arrow flies, its going over a football field.
Do you HONESTLY think that stopping an object going that quick compared to your slow moving fist is going to cause no injury to your hand?
Let's stop this overexaggeration of martial arts and other fist fighters. It's getting ridiculous and makes a majority of us physically ill. Not every martial artist is looking for "the ultimate fight". Not every martial artist has to be The Absolute Master of their craft. And no, using a weapon doesn't make you "Less of a man", it's being smart. The brave and honorable man uses what he uses because it works, not because it makes him seem like he has less testosterone. (Fun fact: Even the Vikings used the bow and arrow. A viking is ten times the man you'll ever be, though you can come close, you can never obtain their level.)
And for Sithis' sake people.
Just because it sounds cool doesn't mean you should do it.
Your hands will thank you later for it.
