Every culture has a legend. Their own unique spin on what once may have been truth, twisted into fable. What some find surprising to this day is that some legends bleed into several cultures, like the child born called a son of the devil. When Lucas first opened his eyes and revealed an undeniably distinct red glow, he was all but cast out of society immediately. His body frail and cold to the touch, as small and feeble as a still-born child. The ward he was born in refused to take him. His mother would not so much as look at him, for fear that a devil would take her mind. Before he was given even a name he was passed from one hand to the next. When the doctors refused to care, they left him with the authorities. When they could find no takers, he was left to the people. When they chose to give him away rather than kill him outright, they gave him to a local abbey, where perhaps he could live the rest of his days and with luck, perish before he came of age.
Suffice it to say, he survived. Thrived even, some might say. An oddity in every sense of the word, Lucas impassively had access to his powers from birth. His caretakers would swear that whilst they tended to him, their very energy left their bodies. Some refused to touch or present themselves to the boy for more than mere moments and viewed having to care for him as a challenge or test of their faith. In this environment he grew, learned and began to observe. Before he knew the words for it, he familiarized himself with hatred and loathing. For self and every worthless being around him
Fifteen years later, no one speaks of the building that once stood, the name 'Lucas' whispered as a tale of caution, if not intentionally struck from remembrance altogether. There were no known survivors pulled from the fire, no known cause or source from the incident. The only detail of note was that the boy was not found among the rubble. While many took this as a sign that he was truly a son of the devil and perhaps perished completely in the fire... There are parents still that warn their children of the red-eyed devil that once lived among them. And may still to this day look down on their home with an unquenchable contempt. "Be sure and pray," they would caution; "you don't want Lucas the light to come visit you!"
