Born weak, Wakiuru was forced to overcome her greatest challenges early in life and did so by healing her own body with magic, which bled from her hands with an easy, natural strength. She grew to be one of the greatest witches in Uganda, and her potential was obvious right away. When she began her studies at Uagadou, she took to most subjects with such zeal that her teachers (skilled witches and wizards themselves) had trouble keeping her entertained in class. It wasn’t long before she was going on to bigger and better things, but never far from home — despite her vast potential in the magical world, her heart belonged at home in Uganda.
She met Peter Soames when she was still a student herself, when he appeared on the doorstep of Uagadou looking very much like a corpse vultures had gotten bored of plucking at. Despite his disgusting appearance, they got along swimmingly after striking up a friendship while he was on the mend. She had a talent for healing as great as her talent for alchemy. They quickly took to long discussions about the differences between Ugandan and English practices on the subject, and she unwittingly became the gateway to his understanding of a great many things from culture to language. All the while, he never told her a thing about why he was there instead of back home, and she never asked, willing to believe that he had his reasons and that they would not define him in the present.
Through the years, their friendship developed into romance, and her wisdom only grew as she inspired questions in him that led to questions she asked herself. All the while, she was never wrong, not once, at least in Pete’s eyes. Their relationship unfortunately fell apart as news slowly broke about who he was and what he had done.
In all their time together, the only time she was ever wrong was when she promised him he was not a bad person. A killer is not so easily forgiven as a criminal. He departed to Kenya not long after she rejected him for good, and though she doesn’t hate him, she also refuses to speak of him or to him, instead returning to her own academic and social pursuits.
