biggrin Chapter 2
The Coming of Granite Grave
Hey, everybody! It's me again, Ezibeth! For our first adventure, I'm going to tell you all about how Ytik Naitramme was started, in a small string of islands off the coast of Canada..........
Betty Sue hated Earth. Humans were destroying their planet, waging wars on eachother, and pretty much destroying everything that was given to them! She hated everything. There were so many things wrong with mankind, she couldn't stand it!
After many hours of thought, she came up with an idea. If she hated mankind so much, all she had to do was find people like her, who would run away with her, and separate themselves from the rest of the world.
Lauren Pelkowski was bored with life. She was bored with her language, bored with the scenery, bored of everything. She wanted to be able to express herself, and she couldn't find a way to do that. A few days later, she heard from a friend about a women recruiting people to live away from the rest of the world, and express theirselves. She decided to go to the auditions, where the woman would decide if someone was really what she was looking for.
The day of the audition, she did everything she was asked to do, and was picked to be a member of the new tribe. Apparently, she was perfect for living away from everyone else, in a place that nobody would know about.
A few days later, a place was discovered. A small chain of islands covered with caves of granite. It was near the bottom of Canada, which was only a week's walk from where Lauren lived. She packed up what she couldn't live without, and left. She didn't sell her house in fear that it wouldn't work out, and she would be forced to move back. After a long day of packing, she set out to the beach where her life would be changed forever.
Betty Sue was overjoyed. Her plan was working perfectly. She had found about a hundred men and women, and a few of them were kids! She knew she had a lot of work to do, but it was fine with her. This was all worth it. Someone had even found the new tribe a place to live!
When everyone finally gathered at the beach, they all worked hard to make 25 rafts that would hold 4-5 people. A few people took the challenge and made canoes
instead. Soon, everyone had gathered on the main island, about 1 square mile in size. Right away, everybody decided on 5 members of government, including Betty Sue.
Lauren couldn't beleive it! She had been elected one of the 5 leaders of the town! It was a huge responsibility, but she felt confident that she could handle it. After everybody decided where they would live (Lauren in a 1-cave island about 50 feet away from the main island, which was going to be a marketplace, with no living quaters), Lauren was assigned to a group of 20 or so people, all who lived in the area around her.
After a long debate about money, the citzens of Granite Grave decided that thier currency would be seaglass. That way if somebody was low on money, they could just search for it along the coast. They searched for 3 hours, and distributed the seaglass that they found evenly so that everybody got 2 small paices and one medium peice. Three small peices were worth a medium peice, and 5 small peices were worth 1 large peice. So, a few people got 1 large peice and nothing else. The members of government got an extra medium peice, so Lauren got 1 large peice and one medium peice.
One hour later, Lauren was in her cave, trying to set up a bed. Everybody was working on it. What did they have that would make a good bed? All Lauren could find was rocks, seaweed, and a lot of sand. After about half an hour of brainstorming and dismissing her own ideas, she heard the calling horn. Somebody had found a way!
Betty Sue had found it. She had found a way to make a bed. After a few minutes of thinking, it came to her: a rock bed with sand in it! The bed that she deigned was made or rock, except for a hollow place at the top, which wss filled with sand. The rock was just support for the bed. Of course, sleeping in sand was not much better than sleeping on the ground, so Betty Sue layered dried peices of seaweed on top of the bed to turn the sand into a mattress. She had found a small tree a few feet away from her cave, and from it's leaves she had sewn a blanket. She had also seen a few larger trees around the islands. There were probably enough leaves to make blankets for everybody! As everyone assembled to see Betty Sue's presentation, she felt proud. She had done it! She had created a colony of people like her, and now everything was going to work out.
At least, that was what she thought.
