A flash of lightning broke through the air, immediately followed by the clash of thunder. Katrina looked up at the sky, wondering how lightning was formed. She shook her head, and continued walking. Ahead of her, a dog was lying down in the middle of the street. Realizing her own loneliness, she ran up to the poor animal, and knelt down next to it. She felt its chest moving up and down, so it was alive. She put her arms under the dogs waist, and picked it up.

Amazed by her own strength, she continued walking, the dog under her arms. She suspected that it was starving, and she wasnt about to just give up on it. She, herself, couldnt remember the last time she had eaten, and judging by the sounds her stomach was making, it was a while ago. She could feel the dogs ribs under her fingers, and she knew that this dogs food was first priority. After all, the poor thing was starving!

She reached a cross in the roads, and according to the signs, she was at Starch and Comsav. She sighed, not having any idea of where she was.

Somebody, please, just give me a sign, she muttered under her breath. Under her arm, the creature moved. She took this as the sign she had asked for, and moved across the street, where, ironically placed, was a long rope on the ground. She eased the dog down, and picked up the rope.

Well, this is strange, she muttered, and tied it in a slipknot around the dogs neck. She had no idea where she picked up the ability to tie knots, but it worked well. Grabbing the other rope and tying it around one of her belt loops, and upon standing up, the dog opened its eyes, and stared at her with hate.

Taken aback by its odd reaction, Katrina took a step back. The rope was to long to yank on its neck, but she was cautious, all the same. The dog tried to get to its feet, but instantly collapsed. She sighed, milling over the situation.

She knelt down next to the dog, and smiled.

Its okay, she said in a soft, soothing voice, I swear, I wont hurt you.

The dog snapped at her, but she slapped its nose. It drew back, whimpering, looking at her with hate still in its eyes. She put her hand on its head, and stroked its neck. It wasnt until now, that she could admire the true beauty of this animal.

Snowy, white fur covered its entire body, as long as a ruler. Its eyes, an amber brown, were soft and moist. Its paws had long, black claws protruding from the tips, and its tail curved up along its back. Oh, and one more thing, it was a girl.

Wow, she muttered, stunned by the perfection. What should I call you..? She ran over about a million names in her head, considering, and dismissing, every one as they came and went. Her gaze rested on the tail, and the perfect name came into her head.

Curly! she exclaimed, as though that was the answer to all her questions. Curly growled, and snapped at her hand, which was making its way down her back. Katrina giggled, saying, Thats the perfect name, dont you think?

Getting no response, she stood up, and yanked softly on the rope.

Come, she said. Straight and to the point. This dog would learn to listen and obey, especially with the way her life was going. The dog scrambled to its feet, and started to gnaw at the rope. Katrina approached Curly again, and slapped her nose.

You will listen to me when I speak, she said with authority. Curly whimpered, and started to follow her slowly.
