Dear Journal,

Today they advanced into our territory. There is nothing we can do to stop them. Soon they will be upon us. We must fight fire with fire, it is the only choice we have... The general has told us tomorrow we fight. Tomorrow we defend for our country. He has made it clear that not all, if any will survive tomorrows brutal battle. But if we are able to cripple the German army at all, then our deaths will not have been in vein.

And as he closed the small, leatherbound journal. And after closing it, he held it tenderly to his heart, as if it were going to be the last thing he ever did. He held the journal for a good 15 minutes before placing it under the pillows. After slipping it away, he fell into his normal routine, crawling into his tiny cot. And as if nothing was wrong with the world, he fell into a deep , baby-like slumber. If you were to take still of this moment, everything would be at peace. There would be no wars, nothing, just, silence. There he would remain, a blank mind, a clear mind, a happy mind. Until finally PFC Johnson came to wake him up.

It was the usual time for the switching of the guards, however Jack did not realise what was going on, as he was still in his general commatose state of sleep. As Johnson came closer, Jack began to be lulled out of his sleep, starting to be woken up by the gentle pitter patter of the footsteps, as he did every night.

"Jack, wake up. It's time for your shift, c'mon hurry up. I am exhausted!" Jack began to hear while being woken up even more. Until finally he was completely awake. Jack flipped his feet over the side of the bed and raised his hands to start rubbing his eyes gently, clearing the puss from his eyes.

"Alright, alright." He answered back to Johnson, as he swiftly got up from the bed. He took his night pack with him as he walked from the trenches to his watch post. And held within the confids of the pack, there was a beautiful silver harmonica. His father had given it to him. This harmonica, was the best present he had ever recieved. He had recieved it on his 16th birthday as a present from his father.
