It was the only thing he had left to remember his father. Jack had always wanted that harmonica, even when he was young he longed for it to be his. However, his father always gave him the same answer, and how it pained Jack. "When you're older". Everytime Jack heared that answer, it would bring him to boiling point, about to explode. Why could he not have the beautiful silver object of his desire, it always puzzled him. But when he hit his 16th birthday and recieved the harmonica, it made it all the better. Having waited so long for this object made it that much sweeter to finally own it. And then, he understood why he had never got it from his Father earlier. He looked closely onto the silver metal, and there, a tiny engraving showed itself to Jack.

"To my darling husband, may this be your shining beacon of light in the dark trenches"

Finally Jack understood the Harmonica. That engraving must've been put there by his mother, as his father would've prepared for the war that Jack was now in the middle of. As soon as he saw the message on the harmonica, he would never let it go.

As he ventured into the enlistment office, Jack saw all the pictures of the men at war. This is what he would soon be doing. He couldn't believe that he was doing this upon his own will. Maybe he would change his mind and want to go home. But in the middle of the war that was impossible, and impossible to change. However, one glance to the harmonica shot all those thoughts from him mind. He would enlist! Just like his father, he would make something of himself, just like his father. How he admired that man...And then like a beautiful dream, all those thoughts vanished, and Jack was left sitting on the edge of a trench.

He took out his harmonica and began playing. He didnt really know how to play that well, but he could fake basic tunes quite well. At least the rest of the guards seemed to like it. All that could be heared on that peaceful night was the gentle sound of Jack's harmonica. All guards on duty began to hum along with the soft flows of the sound. Until like lightning striking, something broke Jack's playing off into the soundless abyss. Gunshots.
