Beware of the fangirl...The diary of a Gaian.
This is the diary of Dawna Celeste, just another ordinary Gaian...or is she?
Property has its uses!
Oh yes, I had a very nice Valentine's Day. A very nice three days, in fact...I went off to Durem because it's got a better party atmosphere thern Barton, silpped on my second-hand-junk mask, and went off to have some fun. I had a great deal of it, starting with kissing Moira, who squealed something about scammers and said I'd stolen her heart. I wasn't sure if I'd really enjoy the kissing contest that was going on, but it was really quite fun. Ron Bruise was there, rushing all over the place, clad only in shoes, socks, shirt, and heart-patterened boxer shorts. I avoided him at first, but then, after a lot of kisses, declarations of love, and screeched insults, I decided to try him out. So...
"Kissy kissy, Mr Bruise?" I smirked, even though I knew he coulden't see it behind my mask. He turned, grinning...
"Stalker!" he yelled. "Get out of my life! Just leave me alone!" He ran off in the other direction, while I stared in astonishment and several other people aimed cat-calls, laughs, jeers, and shouts of "You go girl!" at me.
What a silly goose, I thought. I was cold and slightly put out, and I decided to go see the building that was mine. I was going to do something with it after all!
When I got there, I saw Cindy and Leon standing in the doorway. Well, actually, only Cindy was standing. Leon was kneeling, looking very foolish in his full armour, and holding out a small red box with an open lid, inside which I could see a sparkle.
"Don't be absurd, you old fool!" Cindy said loudly. "It's a bit late for trying out proposals, isn't it?" Off she marched, leaving him looking exceedingly silly.
"Tough luck, Leon," I said, strolling up to him. "Treat ladies better and you might get better results." He dropped the box into the snow and scrambled to his feet, looking horrified. "By the way," I went on, feeling evil pleasure soak through me, "you just blew your Barton Town guard cover. One more bit of evidence against you..." I laughed at the horror spreading over his fat face. "You just stay away from Cindy Donovinh, you hear? And the clock tower too..." The feeling of power was wonderful.
"You're...Dawna?" he wispered.
"Dawna Celeste, mistress of disguise," I said and bowed. "Now get lost, and get off my property!"
"Your what?" he asked, shuffleing off the doorstep.
"You," I said, "were on my doorstep."
"I thought Cindy owned this dump!" he protested. "I saw her come out!"
"That she might have," I said, hiding my surprise, "but it's mine." I shouldn't have said what I said next, but I couldn't resist. "It was given to me as an Xmas present...by my father."
"Your... Who the hell is your father?" Leon was looking angrier by the second.
"None of your business," I said, "and watch your mouth. It'll give you a bad reputation, you know!"
I unlocked the door and stepped inside, letting the door slam very loudly. Chuckling, I headed upstairs. I shouldn't have said that thing about how I got the building, but it had been so much fun to watch Leon get so upset. Revenge really is sweet.
The first thing I noticed when I stepped into the huge room was the fact that the piles of snow that had been there before were gone. The next was that there was glass in the huge windows. The next, as I looked around at the vastness, was that the twisting staircase to the roof had bannisters. Cindy must have had the place fixed up somewhat... My hopes for a disco started to climb again.
I climbed up the stairs, noticing that the bannisters were made of smooth, well polished wood. "Sweet," I muttered. Just add a big gallery and some heating... I looked down from where to stairs turned at the top of the arch. Holding on tightly to the railing, I yelled down, "This is the property of Dawna Celeste, mistress of disguise! Creeps and perverts are to stay out!" The echo bounced back from the floor far below, and left me feeling very foolish. Still, it was fun.
The view from the roof was the same as ever, with Durem looking lovely in the snow. I tossed a few snowballs down onto people's heads, then went down. I wandered slowly toward the gate, kissing and being kissed by some people on the way. The last one was a young woman (or it might have been a very pretty, delicate boy) in gilded armour, a wreath topping the golden locks that fell over her (or his?) pointed, elfin ears. A blush and a wise smile were the response to my kiss, and I set off on my treck through the snow to Barton.
I skirted Barton for the sake of speed when I got to it, as the sun was seting. It got well and truely dark in the woods, and I started to get rather frightened. What kind of things lived here? I was happy to get to the house, and even happier to see that Cindy's car was parked outside and many of the lights were on. The door wasn't locked, and I stepped into the kitchen...
It looked like a disaster had hit. Well, not quite that bad, but compared with its usual neatness... There were dirty plates in the sink, a plastic container half full of a grain and pasta mixture sitting on the table, dirty silverware on the counter, and the fridge door wasn't even closed properly. I closed it, then went into the living room, only to find it even more of a mess. The window was open, one of Cindy's classical music CDs was playing, a jacket, tie, and shoes that were all clearly Cindy's were lying on the floor, and worst of all, a saucer full of cigarett butts was sitting on the coffee table, along with two wineglasses with dregs of wine in them. The empty wine bottle lay on its side on the floor. I started to pick it up, then stopped, wondering just what had happened here. If I was anywhere else, I would have thought of very wierd burglers, but out here? Then it hit me...
I went to the kitchen and looked in the sink. Two plates. A part of my mind wondered why the rest of me was so annoyed. After all, it was Valentine's Day. I wasn't here. Why shouldn't Cindy have some fun?
I went upstairs and stood outside Cindy's door for a moment, then, hating myself for even caring who was in there with her, went quietly to my own room. I took off my outside clothes, then went downstairs and cleaned up. Then, not feeling slightly tired, I went to bed and tried to sleep.
I couldn't. In fact, I couldn't stand to even be in this house, at all. And why should I? The place in Durem was practicly unlivable, but it had to be better than here... I jumped out of bed, stuffed some clothes and as many of the old comic books as I could fit in my pack, put on as many warm clothes as I could, wrapped Lady Luck, who barely woke up, in a sweater, and set off back toward Barton.
That was where I stopped. I thought that at I should take the train, for Lady Luck's sake at least. It was freezing... And then I happened to walk past the part of the old arena that houses the library. It was still open, so I went in, ignoring the suspcious look the librarian shot me. I must have looked very strange, overdressed and laden with bulging backpack and sweater-swaddled, half-asleep cat.
I found a comfortable chair out of sight of the librarian and wondered if she'd check for people when the library closed. This might be a good place to sleep for the night. But I wasn't sleepy at all yet, so setting down Lady Luck and my pack, I started looking around for something to read. I was browsing a book on dolls when I noticed that Lady Luck was awake and striding confidently down a row of bookshelfs. Remembering what luck had come from following her before, I followed her untill she stopped, stood up against the shelf, and putting her paw on the spine of a book she could just reach, said "Mew!" loudly.
I slipped the book off the shelf, and saw that it was called "Heroic Legends". I was about to open it when the librarian called, "You have to leave now, we're closing!"
Thinking fast, I asked if I could get the book from the Durem library, and found out that I almost certainly could. Then I grabbed Lady Luck and my pack, went to the train station, and, after a long wait, caught the midnight train to Durem.
That was Friday night, and now I've got a lot of work to do. I've got to make this place liveable (I nearly froze last night!), get that book...
