Family tradition
In my family we always wore pants, and long sleeved tops.
On days after mom drank we usually went to school with sunglasses.
And when dad couldn't find work we didn't show up for class at all.
At times our sore jaws made it hard to chew our corn pops.
Sour tears, and bitter blood mix running slow like molasses.
Unlike most girls my age the straightening comb was not my best friend.
Your grandmas childhood was much the same.
As she'd tell while I watched her croc tears fall.
Way back then turtle necks were the trend.
Yet she was the only one who seemed to know.
And hide or get hit was her favorite game.
So shut up, eat your pops, and don't let a drop spill.
With your sleeveless shirt, knee high shorts, and pretty eyes that show.
One busted lip is no big deal.
