She had no idea why she was out in the middle of the night. Or was it? Winters up in the North Pole always confused her. Without the sun, days just ran together. No, she was pretty sure it was nighttime. There was nobody to be found and the whole city was dark. Lucky people, she thought. I wish I could sleep.

Hankon had always been a night owl. Wandering the icy city alone at night was a common thing. The rare people she ran into knew her and did not bother with convincing her to go back home. She mad her way to her favorite spot in the Pole: the oasis. It was the only place that was above freezing temperatures and had actual plants. Sure, she loved the ice, but sometimes she needed to get away. She was pretty sure nobody knew about the Spirit Oasis besides the Chief himself and she had never seen him there. She took that as all the more reason to be there.

She walked towards the pond and sat next to it, on the indentation of land that disrupted the perfect circle. Hankon stared into the water, past the reflection of the plain, brown-haired Water Tribe girl that stared back. The two black and white fish always fascinated her, the way they circled each other eternally. She had heard of what happen last winter, when the Fire Nation had attacked. The tribe's own Princess Yue had become the Moon Spirit.

She sat and drank in the power the moon - no, Yue - was giving her. Hankon was a waterbender. She resented her tribe's custom of not teaching girls the ways of combat. The rumors that the rule would be dissolved were taking a long time to come true. With only the knowledge of healing, Hankon resorted to learning hand-to-hand combat. Her weapon of choice was a simple pair of kamas with blue jewels at the bottom of both. She kept them with her, concealed, at all times.

Hankon was shaken out of her thoughts at the sound of fast-approaching footsteps. Thinking quickly, she leaped into the bushes behind her. A man approached the pond with a look is disgust directed towards it. Not soon after, another man appeared with the same hateful look on his face.

“You know, I don't see why we can't just kill the fish now and be done with it,” the second man said clenching his fits.

“Because we are just here for surveillance,” said the first. He walked a full circle around the pond. “And besides,” he continued, “our firebending is crap without the sun.”

Firebending?! Hankon nearly gasped when she heard the man say that but kept quiet in fear of being discovered.

There was a long silence as both men stared at the circling koi fish. “Sir, I think we have company,” the second man said.

“Oh I know. She has been in that bush since we walked in,” the other man replied. Without another word he wheeled around a shot a weak fire blast in her direction. It succceeded in flushing Hankon out of the bush. She pulled out her kamas and took a fighting stance. The first man nodded and a net flew in her direction, capturing her with a scream. She squirmed and struggled to no avail.

“What should we do with this little snitch?” asked the net-thrower.

"Wasn't there a huge pack of armadillo wolves living above the city on the glacier?” the first man replied. Without another word, the second man put Hankon over his shoulder, not at all bothered by the weight. Both men smirked and took the secret trail they had made up to the blizzard region above the city. The cries of armadillo wolves could be heard in the distance as Hankon struggled on in vain.

A water tribe girl was surrounded by a pack of armadillo wolves. She was outnumbered fifteen to one. That was a lot for a single pack. Poor girl... She had some sort of weapon in both hands, they looked like kamas. Even if she knew how to use them well, that girl was a goner. One wolf lunged, aiming for her face. With that, several more attacked. She was not that bad of a fighter. She managed to throw some of the armadillo wolves off but more kept coming. That was the nature of these creatures. They attacked in numbers and were hard to defeatedbecause of the hard shield on their backs.

Growing anxious and hungry, the rest of the wolves lunged. The poor water tribe girl screamed and was no longer visible under the growling mountain of fur and claws. After what felt like the longest few seconds ever, the squirming pile of armadillo wolves practically exploded, snow flying in all directions.

A waterbender. So she did stand some chance. The girl was gushing blood from from numerous gashes all over her body. Numb to the pain, she ran and ran. After a good ten minutes, she could not push on further. Free from the wolves, she collapsed in the snow and ice. Blood spread quickly through the snow as the water tribe girl cried out. Hope was lost. She prepared for death.

“Aang? Aang! Wake up!” The young avatar jolted awake and met the worried eyes of Katara of the Southern Water Tribe. “Aang, relax. It's just me..” she said. He looked down at himself and realized the his tattoos were glowing. He took a deep breath and the tattoos went back to normal. “Must have been some dream.”

“You have no idea...” Aang replied, a little dazed. Just then, a sleepy-eyed Sokka burst through the door, boomerang in hand.

“What is it? What happened?” he demanded.

“Relax,” Katara said. “Aang just had a nightmare.” Appeased, Sokka walked out of the room and the sound of him flopping back into bed the next room over was heard. Aang got out of bed and began getting dressed. “Do you wanna talk about it?” Katara asked, worried.

“I'd really rather not,” Aang replied. “It was pretty gruesome.” Aang walked to the door saying, “I'm gonna get some early practice in.” He stopped halfway out and turned. “Katara, how common are armadillo wolves in the Water Tribes?”

“Uh... Not very. Why?” she replied but earned no answer as the avatar left without a word, leaving her extremely confused.

Gushing tears stung Hankon's wounded face. She was in so much pain, she just wanted it to end. She shut her injured eyes for what she thought would be the last time. Why did it have to end like this? But she heard a voice. Such a beautiful voice... Hankon, I need you to open your eyes.

“B-but.. it hurts...”

I know, I'm sorry. Please open your eyes... Hankon struggled through the pain and opened her eyes. The blood in her vision was blocking the women standing before her. She was glowing and her hair and gown were moving as if there was a wind blowing. She didn't know how, but she knew who this women was.

“Y-yue...?”

Shhh... Yes it's me.

“Why are you here?” Hankon asked, blood gurgling in her throat.

The Spirits told me that this was not how you were intended to die. You have a great purpose that you need to fulfill.

“W-what...”

Don't try to speak... Yue floated over to Hankon and knelt down. She placed her hands on Hankon stomach and chest. The young girl winced in pain. She screamed as the world around her lit up in a strangely warm blue light for a good mile's distance. It dissipated and Hankon was left alone, in a puddle of blood, with the pain gone. She sat up and looked down at herself.
