The original title refers to Kuchisake-onna ("Slit-Mouth Woman"), a folklore figure who, after being mutilated and murdered by her jealous husband, returns as a malicious spirit that mutilates her victims. While it's her husband who's mutilated her, there are many variations of her legend throughout adaptations in literature, television, songs and films.
