Medusa was a half human, half reptilian Gorgon who turned you into stone if you looked at her. One day, Medusa angered Athena, so Athena turned Medusa into something so horrible that anyone who looked at her would perish. When Medusa was slain by Perseus, Athena took her head and put it on her shield, the Aegis. This is that very Gorgon.
PS: I know I lack a ref. picture, the reason is that there are many different versions of her it would be hard to find one resembling this avatar. - Date: 05/22/2009

- Actually, Medusa was slain so Perseus could fight the kraken, in order to save Andromeda's life. You see... Andromeda's mother said that her daughter was more beautiful than the goddess of beauty herself. So she came down and told her to bring Andromeda to the kraken otherwise, it would wreck havoc on the city of Java. Perseus needed Medusa's ability to make things stone, I won't go into detail what happened afterwords but... in the end, the kraken was stone and it crumbled into the sea.

- As someone who is a fan of the mythological character Medusa, I have to say something about this. It's a good one, nicely done, but the story isn't completely straight. It's not really that true that Medusa angered Athena (though some versions say it was Aphrodite). Poseidon r***d Medusa in Athena's temple and Medusa was punished for it. And her only real solid feature was the snake hair. It's good, but I can only really give a 4/5 for it for lack actual material.
