The Namek, Piccolo was all the evil, negative emotions, and thoughts of Earth's protector Kami. Kami needed to be a pure good soul to become the guardian of earth. If one should die then the other would die as well.
Piccolo trained Goku's son Gohan as a child after Goku died... the first time.
