He is a master of black magic, and he wears a wide brimmed hat, these are good reasons for his face to be constantly in shadow. You only get to see his eyes shining out of the darkness. Why is the "Black Mage" wearing blue? In the NES version, the background for the battle screen was black, a blue robe shows up better than a black robe.
