As living things, all trees have spirits. These spirits are able to bridge the gap between the physical and spiritual planes.
A Dryad, like most forest spirits, can change their form at will: They often appear as a beautiful Elven maiden, or when roused, take on a fearsome form with brambles and briars that can easily tear a man apart, and some can move quickly once they uproot themselve and get going.

- Very nice avatar, and a good story as well. However it is inaccurate in that Dryads cannot leave a certain distance from their tree, also they are terribly shy fey. Treants usually guard them.
